Three Portland, Oregon, teens are accused of luring a classmate into a shed, hitting him in the head with a crowbar, shooting him with a BB gun -- and then using a box cutter to carve a swastika into his forehead.

"There is no understanding what they did," Kelli Murrain, the victim's mother, told*CNN affiliate KPTV. "Roll it around in your head and you just go, 'Oh my God.' For the grace of God I could have lost my youngest son."

The incident took place February 10, police say.

On Wednesday, authorities charged the teens with kidnapping, robbery, assault and menacing.

The suspects -- Jenna Montgomery, 15, Blue Christian Kalmbach, 15, and Jess Taylor, 17 -- have been charged as adults and were being held on nearly $3 million bail each.

A 14-year-old, also accused of taking part, will be tried as a juvenile.

According to court documents, Montgomery told police detectives that she was the "bait" to lure the 16-year-old victim, Dustyn Murrain, to the shed where the alleged assault took place.

The teens were after the victim's skateboard and cash, according to a probable cause affidavit.

All of them are students at David Douglas High School.

"I just think the whole idea is just messed up," senior Mark Collins told*affiliate KATU. "Why would you do that to someone? Especially with a crowbar and BB gun."

It's not clear whether the wound on Dustyn's forehead will scar.

Kelli Murrain said her son will wear a silicon patch there to help with the healing.

"He's been severely traumatized not just physically, but emotionally," Murrain said. "It's something he's gonna live with forever, especially if the scar of (a) swastika doesn't go away. Every time he looks in the mirror he's gonna have that memory."



I don't know if these kids have fascist political leanings or not, but it's fucked up either way.

Mhmm, the fact that they actually arrested those kids makes it intresting, normally a carving, esp a swastika is a serious redflag that it was automutilation, its just something that during an actual assault almost never happens.

Sorry but we had discusion before on the board but its just fact that carving, esp initials or swastikas is extremely common in automutalation and almost complety unheard of in assaults/torture. Last time i was sadly right too, I'm not saying it is the case here too but statistics just say that if someone reports an attack involving carving its was about the 30 or so cases i followed in the last 15 years it sadly always turned out to been self inflicted, either its a complete lie (munchausen syndrome) or the attack was real and the victim, feeling embarresed they didn't resist automutalate themselves to make the attack seem more severe.
But maybe this will be the exception that confirms the rule, nothing to do but wait, but I would be very careful to rally behind this case, its just got to many redflags.

Also this was not automutilation. The kid was seen right after they let him go and he had the swastika on his forehead- automutilation tends to happen after the fact. He told them he was going to an ATM to get them money and they let him go- instead he went to an antibody shop, and the carving was there. So no, not automutilation.

I don't understand why kids...they are 15 for crying out loud...need to be trailed as "adults". They aren't adults. That is the whole point of having such a division. Kids are not adults & don't think like adults. In this case, the level of violence was out of line with what was necessary to simply rob him, which is the alleged motive. This was about torturing him. He had to be screaming in pain, yet they continued. How do you help people capable of that?

I'm not calling for retributive violence. I just think some people need to be separated from the community for the community's own safety. Even under communism, I think a small number of people will need to be humanely imprisoned.

Whether the victim had been bullying them previously isn't something that will actually be known but it's been suggested at least as a motivation. If it's a revenge attack then it's just the latest round of a fucked-up situation. If it wasn't a revenge attack, it's still a fucked-up situation. ^ I am not sure whether this is brutal per se given the context of bullying and the glorification of violence within society....and the lack of knowledge how that actually influenced and affected these kids. From what I have so far understood the school and community were and are very hesitant to do something about bullying and to intervene. It may have come to a point where violent revenge was the only solution these kids saw. (basing myself on the assumption that there was indeed bullying)

As such I am loath to jump on the bandwagon of condemning these kids rather than their actions.
