Then again, maybe should it be expected from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_Level:_Why_More_Equal_Societies_Almost_ Always_Do_Better

To be honest I take issue with the ways they quantified "womens physical security", they lumped in legal issues and rights with the risk of being raped and the probability of harassment. The result is that the congo is ranked at the same level as egypt. Now i'm not saying egypt is in a great way as far as women's rights go, but by anyone's standards if we're talking about physical security we've got to consider the congo as being whole degrees of bad worse than egypt

I agree with Firebrand -

These are interesting graphs, but how can "Women's physical security" be put out into a map? I'd really like to how what is exactly being used to define how "strong" security is....

If i were to make a guess, I would have thought it was measured by ascertaining such things as reported/prosecuted rape/violence against women, incidence of forced marriage of women, legal staus of women vis a vis property ownership and other essential rights etc. All of these could be objectively compared between different regions and correlated with things such as the material wealth of a given region, level of education etc.

Something I didn't find out until just now - from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_in_Egypt

Marital rape is not illegal in the country.
