Was there any freedom in free association if it means no state, no means of production and the only thing to survive is to sell your ability or labour power?

I'm not really sure what you're asking.

Could you clarify what you mean by "if it means no state, no means of production and the only thing to survive is to sell your ability or labour power?" Not really sure what you're referring to here.

In general, I think for things like this, it's better to get away from their being a fixed "Marxist view". Marxism isn't intended as a dogma, which means that believing in it should not mean that it fixes all of your views on different issues automatically.

You are going to have to rephrase the question, I am also not quite sure what you are asking.

However, like Skyhilist has said, Marxism is a tool that we use to understand history and society, it is not a fixed set of world views.

What kind of society are you talking about with no state, no means of production and the only thing to survive is to sell your ability or labour power?

I'm sorry if my question is not clear. The concept of free association means that someone who doesn't have property, nor any means of production. The only thing that that someone is to sell his ability that is tantamount. If that person will not work he cannot survive. So, he have no choice but to work in order to survive. Was there any freedom there to choose any means for him to survive?

For most people this is what Capitalism is like. Under Communism the principle would be 'from each according to their ability,to each according to their needs', i.e the individual contributes to society to the best of their ability and in return receives whatever they need. There would be no need to sell oneself, money would be obsolete.

If you're talking about this socialist concept
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_association_%28communism_and_anarchism%29
then there would be means of production (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Means_of_production) and survival would not depend on your labour power.
