Not sure where to put this, so I hope it's fine in this section. If it's not, hopefully a moderator moves it to where it is.

Members of the punk group Pussy Riot, including Nadezhda Tolokonnikova in the blue balaclava and Maria Alekhina in the pink balaclava, are attacked by Cossack militia in Sochi, Russia.

Cossack militia members attacked the Pussy Riot (http://www.theguardian.com/music/pussy-riot) punk group with whips and teargas in the Winter Olympics (http://www.theguardian.com/sport/winter-olympics) host city of Sochi on Wednesday.
Members of the group, including Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, who were released from jail in December, were set upon by uniformed Cossacks, who are acting as an informal police force during the Games, and plainclothes security men as they attempted to record clips for a new protest song.

The group arrived in Sochi on Sunday and say they have been detained several times since. On Tuesday they spent several hours in police detention (http://www.guprod.gnl/music/2014/feb/18/pussy-riot-members-protest-song-detention-sochi), apparently on suspicion of stealing a woman's handbag from their hotel. After several hours of questioning they were released.
On Wednesday the group gathered in a restaurant in downtown Sochi, about 20 miles from where the Winter Olympics are being held. They ran out of the restaurant wearing brightly coloured clothes and balaclavas and were set upon by about a dozen Cossacks patrolling the streets.

"Cossacks attacked Pussy Riot by a Sochi 2014 banner, hitting us with whips and spraying us with teargas, as we were singing the song Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland," wrote Tolokonnikova on Twitter.
The group tried to start performing, but a Cossack smashed their guitar. The incident lasted less than five minutes and one Pussy Riot member was left with blood on his face, saying he had been pushed to the ground. Police arrived and questioned witnesses but did not make any arrests.

Tbh, this incident, all the variables involved, etc. is the epitome Putinzinia. The same could be said (as the article points out) for the Sochi games themselves.

The use of whips is pretty fucked/telling. A pay no attention to what's going on behind the curtain if there ever was one.

"Let's show how progressive and democratic we are by being sure to whip the mouth of any lips bold enough to tell the world how it really is. We've literally gone nowhere."

That's Russia in a nutshell. Look how far we've come to nowhere. Horrible.

you guys do know that the two Pussy Riot ladies had a meeting with Samantha Power after their grand Amnesty International concert. From DIY punks to bourgeois "humanitarian activists". After Putin then what?

How is this relevant? Why should we care? Why are you implicitly condoning the acts carried out by the cossacks against these women ala "let me try to shit on their image/street cred"? In other words, lets not talk about this because I lumped them in with punks and human right bourgy ppl. Wow.

Precisely what's wrong with the lost, errr, left. Always looking to crap on what doesn't neatly fit into its personal, singular outlook.

Pseudo-activists being whipped by a Cossack outside the Olympics really is the height of absurdity.

the revolutionary cred of Pussy Riot is neither here nor there. It doesn't really matter who this guy is whipping - it matters that he is allowed (hell, probably encouraged) to whip people who disagree with the regime.

I think men whipping women for expressing political dissent is not something we should ignore the specifics of. Sure, in general it's still horrid but you know.

actually yes, that's quite true, thinking about it I wonder if men expressing the same sentiment would have been whipped (beaten up certainly, but I suppose the whip has a whole lot of baggage attached to its use and i guess i should have thought abut that.)

Didn't know they still had cossacks in Russia.

Yeah, people who can trace their ancestry to people who were Cossacks under the Tsars are recognized as born Cossacks.
