The SPGB's Summer School this year will be on the theme of 'War' to coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 and be held between Friday, 20th June and Sunday, 22nd June at Fircroft College, 1018 Bristol Rd, Selly Oak, Birmingham B29 6LH

"Capitalism causes war. In the last hundred years there has been a proliferation of war: two world wars, countless other conflicts and civil wars, the Cold War with its threat of nuclear armageddon, and today the 'War on Terror'. Socialists do not support wars, which veil the class struggle by developing a false sense of identity between the working class and the capitalist class.
The interests of the two classes are always antagonist, and that is why as socialists we speak of the class war. Socialism means, among other things, internationalism, rather than nationalism which always contributes to war.
Our weekend of talks, workshops and discussion will examine the role of war in capitalism and how only socialism can abolish war from the Earth."

Nothing on minority groups' liberation?
Nope, but they'll be plenty on the majority group's liberation, the working class...

I assume there's not going to be anything on the destruction of the family as a social unit either?

Family in Class Society was the title of the talk on Friday 12th July 2013 at last years summer school (see here http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/event/summer-school-2013-birmingham). Have you been to many SPGB summer schools?

Christ, it was a sarcastic reference to another thread. Of course I haven't - no sane person would want to.

Been to many of your little Summer activities. I've seen photos from Swedish equivalents - they look drab.

No sane person would assume 'there's not going to be anything on the destruction of the family as a social unit' when there was just that, a talk entitled 'Family in Class society', at the last event of SPGB summer school less than a year ago. Since 'sarcastic' usually means a remark with the opposite meaning, I'll leave it to others to judge whether your remark was 'sarcastic'. Perhaps however you could tell us whether snide remarks are (to paraphrase your remark from that other thread) the 'type of behaviour that's holding us back.'

Just over two weeks now left to book for the SPGB's Summer School in Birmingham. There are are a few places left but they will soon be gone.
As already outlined the theme for this year's weekend is 'War', and there's a packed programme including five talks, one workshop session, an exhibition about the SPGB and the Second World War, a film showing, the première of the new pamphlet about war, an exclusive publication about war films, and literature stalls.
There'll also be plenty of time for socialising over a meal, in the venue's gardens and down the pub. The event is being held over the long weekend 20th - 22nd June at Fircroft College in Birmingham.
The cost, which includes accommodation and meals, is an incredible £80 or £40 concessions.
For more details, follow this link: http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/event/summer-school-2014-birmingham
Attendees at the event will also be able to get another exclusive publication - a pamphlet titled 'Hatari! Africa, War and HIV' by Steve Clayton, on top of the (100 pages+) War Films book and the première of the new SPGB pamphlet on the First World War.

The SPGB has Swedish equivalents? I think the world needs to know this.
If the world does know it, then I apologise, I must have been dozing when someone read the memo.

Hrafn might be doing the usual mix-up of Socialist Party (SPEW) and Socialist Party (SPGB), but in fact the latter did have a Swedish 'Companion Party' sometime in the 1980s, I think. Mind you, I very much doubt they had a Summer School-type gathering

I remember the Austrians ('Revolutionary Socialist Group', or something?). I don't remember the Swedes.

The Swedish lot began informally in the early 1970s, producing a journal called 'Världssocialism'. This led to individuals in Uppsala and Stockholm forming the Världssocialistiska Gruppen (the World Socialist Group) in 1979. I'm not sure if they ever did get round to declaring themselves to be a 'Party'...
I think that the Austrian Impossibilists, The League of Democratic Socialists (Bund Demokratischer Sozialisten) joined up with the SPGB in the 'World Socialist Movement' in the late 1960s, but it all ended in disgrace! According to Wiki, the Bund began to print "a number of nationalistic, anti-immigration articles. As the opinions expressed in these articles could not be reconciled with the WSM's Declaration of Principles, the Bund was dropped as a WSM companion party circa 2003." Crikey :o

Quote function has gone screwey again I'm afraid.

Thanks, I don't speak Swedish pareticularly, but I speak European. I got "Världssocialistiska Gruppen".

Yes, when I first discovered the SPGB in the late 1990s, they had an Austrian affiliate, which disappeared in the early 2000s. I seem to remember hearing they'd been expelled from the WSM for nationalism.
Really couldn't remember what they were called and couldn't be bothered to go hunting through back copies of the Standard to find out, though.
