Not that it's a bad thing (it's certainly good), but could someone please explain to me why in general the ultra-orthodox Jews tend to be the most anti-Zionist? Last year also there were 20,000 Jewish people in NYC protesting against Zionism, and almost all of them were orthodox Jews. Does anyone have any idea of why it might be that a higher proportion of orthodox Jews seem to be anti-Zionist than with other sects/types of Jewish people?

Because the Orthodox Jews believe that the state of Israel is an abomination against God and a sin. They believe they were exiled by God and only the messiah can bring them to their new land. It is specifically forbidden for Jews to establish their own country until that happens. Essentially Orthodox Jews believe that Zionism is not part of Judaism and that it is a sinful idea that will doom the entire Jewish community because of the disloyalty to God.
If you follow the youtube video that is posted here...at the end...it links to a 5 part documentary about ultra orthodox Jews in Israel. This is...revealing...and may show you some more about Ultra Orthodox faith and way of live.

I could be wrong, but I think dogmatic Judaism refuses the creation of a holy land for the Jewish people until the 'redeemer' comes. Many also realize the unnecessary bloodshed that has resulted from the creation of Israel. This stems not just from the harm that it has caused the Palestinian people, but also that Jews are constantly threatened by war, while they are otherwise safer elsewhere.

Not all orthodox strands oppose Zionism though, for many that are now protesting its more that they feel that the Jewish state needs Jewish scholars and that their religious studies serve the state more than them going in the army. They see it as an attack on their orthodox traditions by forces of secularism.

As for the ultra-orthodox in Israel, called Haredim, they are mostly anti-zionist in name only. No doubt, this is an important development if part of the Israeli Jews decide to break with Zionism, and we should support that, without giving political support to their ultra-oppression of women, or the fact that a 1/3 of them live in settlements or their religious oppression.
