From what i know the history behind his overthrow is hazy, the CIA connection is tenuous (and always is right!).

On the face of it, it seems like a lost dream. The first democratically elected Marxist president, think about what kind of consequences that could have had around the world! No bloody revolution, we get in through democracy!

I remember seeing one US official at the time in an interview years later saying 'and why not, another Marxist state? no way!' or words to that effect. Real bastion for democracy around the world aren't american administrations past and present.

If it's info you're looking for, try these links:

The coup (http://www.geocities.com/educhile_1970s/September11.html)

Salvador Allende (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvador_Allende)

Something that I've always found interesting is the fact that Pinochet was appointed by Allende to some high-ranking military position, I can't remember which one now. Pinochet and Allende were relatively close (in a business sense only, I don't know whether or not they knew eachother personally).

Pinochet and Allende

"Not a nut or bolt shall reach Chile under Allende. Once Allende comes to power we shall do all within our power to condemn Chile and all Chileans to utmost deprivation and poverty." -- Edward Korry, US Ambassador to Chile, upon hearing of Allende's election

"I don't see why we have to let a country go Marxist just because its people are irresponsible." -- Henry Kissinger

And here's one more link (http://www.betterworldlinks.org/book62a.htm) that might be useful...
