Powerful scary story and imagery, the white power meets, the fat white singing about bathing in the blood of "niggers" as he drives and especially the headstomp scene. I draw certain paralells between this movie, romper stomper and higher learning. Romper Stomper is probably the darkest because by the end none of the characaters really learnt anything. Norton is a very versatile actor to go from American History X to Death to Smoochy

i thought this movie was excellent i saw it last night for the first time(as a matter of fact i was going to make a american history x thread )
well bad to the movie, i thought the movie was truly amazing as edward norton really just destroyed all peoples views of racism and shit like that. All because of 2 people did he change showing that racism is really wrong..... the ending made me shed a tear.

I liked American History X but I felt that there could have been alot more to it. I guess its part to due with the fact that the director Tony Kaye was not given exclusive rights in the editing room, which led to a cut that he wasn't satisfied. Possibly if his own cut were released the movie would have felt more complete. It did have a profound positive message, although it was cliche in certain parts I did enjoy this movie.

Damn it! This was one of those movies that I really wanted to see so I dragged my friend to the video store (A LONG ASS WALK) to go rent it. And then somebody returned it before I got the chance to watch it <_< Is it anything like The Believer ? Or at least I think that's what it's called

I watched it at school (in anthro. class) it was pretty nice. Although kind of unrealistic...
edward norton: hey nazis are bad!
nazi guy: really? okay. (stops being a nazi)
I wish it worked that way, but I don't think nazis give in that easily.
But other than that it was good.
I haven't seen the believer, but I hear it's more about anti-semitism. The nazis in american history x, I dont think they said anything at all about jews, it was really only anti-black. But they're probably similar.

American History X focuses on the rednecks so Jews aren't really a big "problem" in those areas, The Believer was about a Jewish-Nazi who decided to become a skinhead (rollseyes) and HIDE his roots to become White Power (rollseyes). Romper Stomper is about nazi-boneheads in Australia trying to kick out the Vietnamese immigrants in the country.
The fat guy in American History X has an Anti-Heros tattoo, which was a big kick in the nuts because they're not nazis.

Yeah thats right. The movie had some suspicious parts.Like Norton became so easy friends with that black man.The most fucked up part was when he was walking away from school and his head turns slowly back. A classic in american films.

I like Romper Stomper more, personally but its pretty good. I don't like the fact that they make it so you feel bad about Danny by the time he gets killed though.

What? Neither of those things happened like that. He almost got lynched at the rally for being a 'nigger' (i.e. a non-Nazi) and he wouldn't talk to the black guy at first (you're talking about the guy in the prison, right?). He only really became friends with him because he wasn't in with the other Nazis in the prison and he needed someone to ally himself with. Remember when he's leaving and he tells the guy he probably wouldn't have survived without him?

Not to mention stuff like this happens all the time in real life. I have a buddy that used to be a neo-Nazi skinhead type. One day he was getting the crap kicked out of himself by three white kids. This big black guy named Miko (whom my friend had never met) happened to be walking by and proceeded to beat the stew out of all three of them. My friend's currently in the process of getting his iron eagle tattoo removed with laser surgery.

I don't think it's that far a stretch for someone to leave the ideology of the nazi's behind after being brutally anally raped and knocked unconscious in the shower by a group of skinhead nazi's who were supposed to be your "brothers".
He then leaves that group behind, and is protected by his black work partner from the other inmates for the duration of his incarceration.
I think it's fair to say after a set of circumstances like that he may have had an epiphany don't you?

It's not an anti-Nazi movie. Norton's story (broadly speaking) could have happened to any member of any political group, religion, cult, race, social grouping etc etc. To me, it would be about the dangers of mob mentality (ie bandwagon jumping) and binary thinking (Us vs Them etc).

Its a brilliantly directed, moving film, Edward Norton is incredible in it.

Actually, his work partner just talks to him, even though he's supposedly a Nazi, and Norton realises that blacks aren't the incarnate evil.
His real epiphany comes after his rape when the only person willing to visit him is his former black principal.

No, you're forgetting when he's leaving the prison and he stops in the yard to talk to his workmate/friend before he goes out the gate and says. " I get the feeling that the only reason I'm leaving here alive is you"
The guy doesn't say anything...just smiles and then Norton says..."I thought so...I owe you man".
