Right now, the EPA is preparing to propose changes to the Worker Protection Standard (WPS), the rules intended to protect farm workers from the harms of pesticides. These rules are weak and unenforced — and long overdue for an overhaul.
The UFW is working with a coalition of groups who plan to present a petition (http://action.ufw.org/page/m/3bed9f39/14552b18/479fb392/2b4455d9/440631705/VEsO/) with more than 10,000 signatures to the EPA this week. The petition urges the EPA to include meaningful protections for workers in the proposed changes to the WPS. Already thousands across the country have signed.
The two million farm workers who plant, tend and harvest the country's produce face pesticide exposure every day in fields and orchards across the country.
Farm workers are explicitly excluded from workplace protections other workers enjoy. The WPS was designed to fill this gap, but after more than 13 years of promised improvements, this regulation remains weak and unenforced.
