Anyone know of any good drinks to make with gin? I've never drank gin before but a recent conversation I had about it with some other people prompted me to buy a bottle of Tanqueray to try it out. I've been told that it's terrible to drink straight...usually I'll just drink liquor (mostly bourbon or scotch) straight, or on ice...the guy at the liquor store recommended just serving it with some lime juice & ice.
Anyway, any gin fans here?

Pretty much anything but Seven Up or Sprite with ice is always my fav even if you get shit gin like Bankers Club, Crystal Palace, etc. I usually drink it neat or with ice, well, when I did drink anyways.

Yeah I've been trying to cut back on the ol' alk-eee-haul-ism, personally. But I only really drink to excess in social environments. Usually if I'm drinking by myself I'll cap it off after one or two drinks, it's much healthier for me.

For gin and tonics and gimlets I don't think you need anything more expensive than Seagram's. For martinis I have found Citadel to be the absolute best. I go heavy on the Dolin dry vermouth (four parts gin to one part vermouth; i.e. 2 oz gin to 0.5 oz vermouth per drink). I think that Hendrick's on the rocks with a lemon twist is a nice drink as well.
Tanqueray is a fine gin. I wouldn't waste it with tonic so I'd drink it on the rocks with a twist or in the above stated martini.
You could also make a nice negroni but that is a totally different flavor.
Cheers.

I think the best thing about it is that you really don't need to spend much for good stuff. Like, Gordon's is $20 and comes in a plastic bottle and it's still pretty good stuff. I like Beefeater a lot too but goddamn I can hardly justify dropping $40 on a bottle because I'm cheap beyond reason.
Gin is also one of the few liquors that I drink straight and kind of like.

The cheaper the gin the more you have to mix it, that's pretty much a given.
Indian tonic water is the classic mixer. Or bitter lemon.
I like Hendricks with a slice of cucumber and ice.

the last time i had gin, i had a bad reaction to it. like, i couldn't breath and it felt like my lungs were closing up. which was weird. i took a benadryl and it calmed down.
i guess that means i'm allergic to juniper berries. where i used to live, there was tons of them and there was even a seasonal malady called "cedar fever" that a lot of people got which was caused by juniper pollen. i was one of the lucky ones in the area that never was affected by this. but i've always hated the smell of juniper trees anyway. i guess i figured i would be able to tolerate it if it was in alcohol form. nope.

Good news, Crystal Palace and I think Bankers Club are only like 15 bucks per litre! atleast were I live. Bankers club makes I assume barely not blindness inducing version of a every popular spirit from gin to whiskey to vodka to tequila at dirt prices but the taste is reminiscent of kerosine or nail polish remover depending on the spirit. There are lots of vodkas but Stolichnaya has always had a good reputation. A USSR export vodka. Recently had a bottle of Smirnoff Vanilla, very nice.
As others have also said I didn't use to like spirits neat, they all seemed to taste like firewater. But recently started getting into them, a little too much. I used to mix American whisky with cola but now drink it neat.
So far I am rating yank whisky in the following order:
1. Jim Beam Honey
2. Jack Daniels
3. Wild Turkey 81
4 Jim Beam
Probably going to try Buffalo Trace next as it's quite highly regarded and readily available unlike many other American whiskeys.
Os Cangaceiros

I kind of went through a brief "honey liquor" period about a year or so back, namely Jack Daniels Honey, which I think is pretty damn good. Kind of strikes a middle ground between Barenjager (which is like honey alcohol syrup, too strong honey taste IMO) and Bushmill's honey, which has less of a honey flavor than JDH.
I've never had Jim Beam's honey liquor, though.

Well I don't drink whiskey to savor the exquisite flavor of the drink or anything, although at this point I've drank a wide variety of all manner of whiskey, but esp. Canadian whiskey and Kentucky/Tennessee bourbon/whiskey, and I'd like to think that I can separate the wheat from the chaff at this point. Mostly when I'm drinking whiskey at the bar, I'll drink it neat in a tumbler or something, and I won't down it. But if I'm drinking with my friends it's usually shots until the fifth is empty, and after that possibly more. Yeah, it's a problem. R&R (affectionately refered to as "nar nar") is a favorite for that kind of thing, simply because of how dirt cheap it is, as is Early Times and Black Velvet. All trash, IMO.
I hate wine and sugary drinks, for the most part. I'm not big into beer either.
SHORAS

Whisky does have a lot more flavour than I first thought and it changes greatly depending how you drink it. I wouldn't say loads of flavour like all the bullshit the distilleries come out with. But, it's good to try it on its own, with a tiny amount of water, with a bit more water - but careful not to drown it with too much. I still don't mind a whisky and soda but it is a bit of a waste. I wouldn't do it with an expensive whisky (most of them in this country!) or something I really liked.
Wine I've found is very difficult and pretty random to get something enjoyable to drink, in my experience you have to spend a little money. Don't buy the bargain basement stuff. The problem with wine is you can have something great and then you will never have it ever again because bottle to bottle, case to case, year to year it all fucking changes. And you have to eat with wine ideally.

I distaste all club drinks, flavored liquor and so forth. Liqueurs are good occasionally, but just barely, and only in the right context. As far as whiskey goes, I give preference to Jameson. Oft I have found that gin is better in the winter, whiskies and brandies in spring and summer.

well, whiskey is meant to be savored and embraced, which means it should never be shot. bad whiskeys just shouldn't be consumed at all. here, though, "cheap" doesn't necessarily mean "bad". when i didn't have a lot of money, Canadian Mist was often my fall back and it really wasn't that bad of a drink, all things considered.

Sloe-Gin: Harvest sloe berries from the blackthorn tree/bush at the end of summer. Wash and prick the berries. Get hold of some cheap gin and three quarters fill a demijohn or other similar vessel with the gin. Add the berries. Add a pound of sugar. Seal and leave over winter. Occasionally give the vessel a shake over the course of the winter. In the spring, siphon off the liqueur (now a deep shade of pink) into bottles leaving the remnants of the berries behind. what you have there is sloe-gin. It's unbelievably georgeous to drink and will get you pissed in no time. You can also make sloe-vodka.

They'd more likely be driving a Gilbern, Zim.

nicked a filthy cheap bottle of it from the supermarket with some friends when we were around 16. it tasted like petrol and i got so disgustingly drunk and ill that even the smell of it disgusts me.

Jim Beam's products (including DC) are generally pretty good. Usually what whiskey I get depends largely on what I'm willing to spend; usually if I'm feeling cheap it's Evan Williams
Yes, Jim Beam. Ole buddy Jim. Very good. Good straight, good with coke, good with sprite, good on the rocks, good in a boat, good on a flight.
Wild Turkey, either straight or with 7-up.
Jack Daniels, either straight or mixed in a fruit Icee from the gas station.
Jameson, always straight.
whiskey, mmm. bourbon, mmm.

This is all spot on. ;) Only thing I can't drink anymore is JD, it should probably come with bail money when you buy a 40.

Oh ya. I can handle a social shot or two at the bar, but when there's a bigass bottle lying around it always leads to trouble.

Jack Daniels is awesome, I can drink that all day and all night. Not that I should. Or anyone should. Alcoholism is bad, mmm'kay.
On the other hand, a couple weeks ago I split a six pack of beer and a bottle of wine with someone and the next morning I had a headache that felt like someone was prying into my skull with a crowbar.

Tried a gin sour with cucumber recently, which was delicious.
