Hey folks, i am currently playing some Hearts of Iron 3 (a grand strategy game) as Germany. I wanted to play it slightly realistic and made short work of France, Poland, The low countries, and all the countries in the balklans. Instead of occupying them i just set up puppet governments in all except for France.

I then prepared for Barbarossa. For a year i bolstered my forces from 500k unmechanized troops to 150k mechanized troops and 650k unmechanized troops. i expanded my air force by 33% and only my navy saw massive loses from the royal navy causing me to lose all my battleships, battlecruisers, and submarines and kept my navy stuck in port.

On june 22, 1941 i launched my attack (the real date of barbarossa). I easily crushed their forces although being outnumbered 2:1 by their 1.5 million troops. by November i had pushed 1/3 the way to Stalingrad in the South and 1/2 way to Moscow. Winter set in and my advance ground to a halt. A allied invasion near Normandy caused me to send 100k of my forces west so even though in encircled and defeated almost 500k men only losing around 50k, i was still fighting an uphill battle.

The Soviet Union just got a 25% defense modifier which means that getting my offense off the ground will take some might. What should my plan of action be? Should i strike North to Leningrad with motorised forces? Should i attack for Stalingrad with tanks? Or should i keep pushing for Moscow. Bear in mind that i have 65k Waffen SS armoured units for a thrust into the motherland. Advice from people that haven't played HOI3.

P.S. would anybody want to read a After Action Report (AAR) of the campaign?

Leningrad is a tough nut to crack. Palying as Sov I actually went from Defense to offense in that regin due to the limited movement space. The shores, lakes, forests, and rivers make for a high desnity soviet position with supreme defensive bonuses. I would use armor stacks and slowly manually take one sector at a stime in a leap frog fashion prioritizing the destruction of their most expensive units first When the north broke, it BROKE.

so yeah, dont go to leningrad. you'll just push soviet forces into a very tight pocket.

Yeah, go for Moscow. IIRC Stalingrad is basically just a propaganda victory. And hey if you can slam the Caucasus and take Russia's oil supply then you're set, right?

I remember I last played HOI3 as a Fascist Brazil. The USA never landed in Normandy because the Atlantic was infested with Brazilian U-Boats (but, interestingly, did manage a landing in Amsterdam -- which was historically one of the potential landing sites before they decided on Normandy due to Amsterdam being a deep-water port). So the Soviet Union just plowed through Germany and liberated all of Europe from Poland to Portugal and huge swaths of Africa, China, and then all of Japan. The war continued on into 1946 with a British, American, and Russian invasion of Brazil from the north, with massive, bloody battles and devastating attrition and guerrilla skirmishes in the Amazon rain forest as my U-boats denied everyone access to the east coast.

Was a stalemate. The Allies couldn't get a foothold in Brazil and I certainly couldn't take the fight to them. I "lost" in that USSR liberated 3/4's of the Earth.

Japan got Australia though so that's cool.
