So, I guess everyone on this forum could be considered a socialist in one way or another. So socialism for me ranges from democratic socialism to anarchism, with Marxism in between. The real topic is how we are depicted and treated on television, this of course varies country to country. How are we treated on in shows, movies, news, and anything else that appears on TV. I'll start off with what I've seen here in the "free market homeland" known as the USA.
Staying true to it's free market values, the US media is a hostile environment for all things genuinely left wing. Even social democrats seem to have trouble here, so that means that Marxist's, communists, and socialists are all basically sub-human on television. I have not seen any sympathy for them on any TV broadcast here in the US. The terms Marxist, communist, and socialist are all political swear words, usually annoyingly used interchangeably with fascist and nazi. Anarchists, I have not heard much of, but they usually are mis-represented as rioters. All of my positive leftist media, comes from the internet, since the increasingly right-wing television in this country has proven uninhabitable for us socialists.
The biggest problem with this is the misinformation pumped into the minds of the proletarian. It's obvious why socialism is so scarce in the USA, and reactionary beliefs are on the rise. The only choices presented are conservatism, which continues it's drift to the right, and right-wing liberalism, chasing behind conservatism. Even when it comes to other languages, the bourgeoisie have tight grip to ensure that some of the most oppressed people of the USA do not drift to far to the wrong end.
Personal feud:
As a spanish speaker, I frequently watch the spanish language TV giant Univision. They have always been hostile when it comes to the presentation of leftism in Latin America. Many misinformed hispanics I know, had negative views about Chavez and no idea of the positive changes he made to benefit the poor. The Venezuelan state is still under media attack, as well as the left-wing Salvadoran political party FMLN with elections coming up. They victimize the country with the worst human rights record in the western hemisphere, Colombia. A prime example on the attack on the left is reporting on possible ties between FARC and drug trafficker "El Chapo Guzman" as well as the Ecuadorian government, with a reporter referring to the government as "the Correa regime". This despite the fact that most of the drug trafficking in the country is done by government backed right-wing paramilitaries, some with confirmed ties to "El Chapo" and the Sinaloa Cartel.
They are also strong supporters of the Democratic party, propagating that they will save the immigrants with a reform. Leaving most of the spanish speaking population loyal to the Democratic party, with their ears inched towards the bourgeoisie propagandist Jorge Ramos.
Back to the topic:
Sorry for the long intro, but when it comes to immigrants I just can't stand such misinformation. I've also been looking to attack Univision for a while. So let us know the condition for socialism on TV in your country. Give us your thoughts and feel free to do what I did and attack a network.
