this is a really interesting and extensive article that i recommend, if only because some (a lot) of you here could do with discovering some of the excellent music profiled in the piece.
but seriously, as a (straight) fan of house and techno music i've always been aware and fascinated by the roots of these genres in what were essentially gay, black, working class subcultures. the radical left, obsessed as it often is with guitar-based music (punk rock!!), tends to overlook - to put it mildly - dance and club culture as something base and tacky. it's an attitude that means ignoring what were - and sometimes still are - pretty radical communities. and, again, the music is great.
