this is a really interesting and extensive article that i recommend, if only because some (a lot) of you here could do with discovering some of the excellent music profiled in the piece.

but seriously, as a (straight) fan of house and techno music i've always been aware and fascinated by the roots of these genres in what were essentially gay, black, working class subcultures. the radical left, obsessed as it often is with guitar-based music (punk rock!!), tends to overlook - to put it mildly - dance and club culture as something base and tacky. it's an attitude that means ignoring what were - and sometimes still are - pretty radical communities. and, again, the music is great.

saw this posted on fbook the other day and was surprised about why there's such a shock about the culture having strong lgbt strains etc.

this is only even a question given the re-accumulation of the scene by white middle class hipsters in recent years. they have no clue, its just trendy now but its been a thing from since way before they were even born.

i think it's also to do with american frat boy, 'jock' culture and the whole 'edm' scene, which is atrocious in so many ways.

but yeah, it's not a surprising story, still an interesting read.

For a second, I read this as "an alternate history of sexuality in the Culture Club."

And I thought it was alternate history in the sense of a counterfactual historical narrative.

I was hoping it was that in a way, sounded interesting and cool. I may not like electronic, club, or techo type music, but I certainly love my guitar based music haha.
