Does anyone have any knowledge of where this disgusting shit started? I've been reading news articles and personal accounts by people living in Korea of modern-day minstrel shows playing out in South Korea, and have no idea how it all started.

For those who don't know, the blackface racist tradition of people dressing up in stereotypical clothing, painting themselves black and acting out racist stereotypes to an audience that was so common in Jim Crow and slavery-era America is absolutely huge in S. Korea. From children's cartoons to daily comedy shows, Africans (especially African-Americans) are depicted as primitive, rude, unintelligent, aggressive, sexually loose (women) or hypersexualistic and rape-inclined (men) and unpredictable. It's at the level of racism where I'd traditionally skip the debating and calling out and get right into the skull-cracking.

You know where there isn't blackface? Best Korea.

More seriously this is very odd and I'm curious as to what are the roots for this pop phenomena. Surprisingly, I was unawares of this. I'll look into it more and respond more properly latter. Very interesting thread. My thing is, where did shit like this...

Come from, u kno? I'm sure this isn't some modern occurrence, what are its origins? And what I mean by all this is specifically what are the South Korean origins not the origins of the practice itself. Just wanted to be clear.

Edit: didn't mean to just echo the OP, after a re-read, it may seem that way. Anywho, I found this article which explores the origin of South Korean blackface. Oddly enough SK commentators, as quoted by the article are taking these criticisms as an "attack."

Thanks for the link.

And of course they are claiming that it is an attack - they're filthy racist arsewipes who make money off of filthy racist tropes. You get the same thing from racists of all kinds in the US.

Not even last week did I see a news article about a Korean pop star who made all these comments over social networks about having a holocaust of African-Americans and people from Latin America to "make the world a better place <3". I'm at least glad that that particular monstrosity is now residing in a mental hospital.

I think we should actually have a separate thread on racism - or even society in general - in Japan and Korea in the discrimination section. I've been doing some background research over the past year or so, and my findings were absolutely shocking. Let's just say that I'm not surprised that those two countries have some of the highest suicide rates on earth.

Racism, unfortunately, is common throughout the world, and it is not just owing to western influence. That would mean that westerners alone are racist - which is false - but also that other people don't have a mind of their own and are acting as puppets of western culture. Which is equally false.

Truth is, there are people in every country who'd wish to dominate others - and race or skin color, in their opinion, is a good way to do that because it's the most obvious. Separating people on that basis is easier. Also they feel good about demeaning others.

This was a useful post^^^

As for this blackface shit it pisses me the fuck off. I remember my dad telling me about that and bringing up other dark garbage..... Trigger*** he'd bring up the sex slave trade and how he'd see American men and soldiers buy 10 year old girls forced into prostitution. He said he could hear some children screaming, and apparently a lot of soldiers would buy these little girls and destroy them.... my father was stationed on the DMZ in Korea. He's told me a lot of really disturbing shit from when he was there that I'm not too comfortable posting.

It's actually pretty crazy. I think it would be particularly interesting to compare and contrast Best Korea and South Korea in this respect. Not only this, I'm not sure if you were aware but other Asiatic countries have demonstrated this whole blackface thing as well. Look here.

The more research I do, the more of a widespread phenomena this seems.
