space is an extremely nessescary fronteer to explore, i mean think about it, with overpopulation, and the ridiculous ammount of polution we are sticking ourselves with, we need an escape plan, just in case our stupidity catches up with ourselves

YES!!! This is EXACTLY the attitude to take!!!

Why bother exploring new frontiers anyway? Space will not solve the problems of overpopulation, it will only delay them! Eventually we'll have to hop into another galaxy; ultimately another Universe! As you quite rightly say, we need to deal with issues "at home" first of all - then consider (and only consider!) space exploration.

Plus, the amount of money it would cost is obscene. Surely the American Government would rather puchase a few more B-52's or missiles or something? Maybe bomb another country? If they were feeling REALLY mad, they could do something silly like write off third world debt, or feed the poor...

The way to control overpopulation is to make better use of the land. There is plenty of room for all humans on this planet, selfishness is hurting that. A space program is a complete waste of resources.

Space exploration is usefull in the long run.
As a matter of science and discovery it is boud to be fascinating.

As a matter of population control it is entirely useless, and right now we have far more pressing concerns.

Ask again when we actually have an egalitarian society, then it will be worth considering.

i think if we quit fighting and focus on expanding and then we could live under any kind of government we choose or no government at all there is enough land and resorses
for every one in space

spending 800 million US behind stupid Spirit that we barely have contact with now just to answer the stupidest question ever, 'was there life on mars' is so dumb.

There's problems in America right now that need more attention. Abolishing the UN? What's more irrelevant is the need to pump out billions of dollars for shit that doesnt even work to explore space.

Grade A bullshit and clear robbery of taxpayers.

yeah, space exploration is not necessary. Ultimately no country
got much out of their programs. The U.S. jost lost billions of dollars
and the USSR did the same. Now the Chinese want to join the manned
space mission wagon, and they will lose billions as well. All this foolish
spending while there is desperate need for more money on Earth.

There are some reasons to conduct space travel but they are all less important than understanding and intervening in the mind control that propels the insanity on the planet right now. The current media space trip is a distraction that tries to get us into the "fantasy power" mode as if we are actually so powerful we do not need to focus on controlling our own government.

We need to understand the invisible compulsions that let us neglect control over a government that seems moe and more driven to create world dominance and ignore the purity of the sacred elements of air and water. Oh ............ let's not forget the peoples neglect to defining their purposes and uniting behind them. It is actually at the root of the problem.

i mostly agree with everything u guys said. i think it's not stupid to explore space or sth, but there's really not ienough money for issues (in some countries) here on earth, so i think we should fix that first before throwing millions and millions into space.

we all know why america wants to go to space - why you ask- well its not to look around in wonder and awe of how amazing it is .no its not. what its about is the posability they could exploit natural resources that potentially be exploited for there own use .bush said it himself in explaining the programme ''the moons natural resources that could be used'' . they could also be looking for a new dumping ground for there nuclear waste . maybe im being unrealistic but as far as im concerned anything is possible with them what do you think does anyone agree with me ?

anyone ever research the first moon landing? There's alotta conspiracy theories behind it, oh, check out the movie 'Capricorn 1'. It's about how a gov't killed these astronauts who tried to inform the public about a 'fake moon landing' that they took part in...kinda parallels the neil armstrong one...

I dunno, space is very intriguing and all...i've always had an interest in it. But lump sums like 800 Million US i really feel its not worth it. That money could've been used for sooooo many other crap that we've done on earth here...such as, oh i dunno, research for AIDS in africa?! lol...

Ah well, i'm not an American, so its not like my money went towards that crap. hehe.

The U.S. is donating in escess of $1 billion a year for fighting AIDS in Africa, however this is not a great amount. The U.S. has a lot of problems at home. If their money is not spent on space travel it will undoubtedly be spent lowering taxes or buying weapons. However, they have moved towards some environmental funding in the last few years.

I agree though, it is a waste. But, if we did have the money it would be a great thing to do.
