One side wants to join the EU and is very Russiaphobic. The government, headed by Viktor Yanukovych, backed out of a deal to integrate into the EU a few months ago. Vladimir Putin wants Ukraine to join the rival Customs Union. Some Ukrainians support this measure (there are many ethnic Russians in Ukraine), although I bet most of the people who are anti-EU are not necessarily pro-Russia.

There is no "good" side here. Putin & Russia are capitalist shills just like the EU. What's worrying is the growth of Ukrainian far-right provocateurs like Svoboda. Not too long ago, they toppled a statue of Vladimir Lenin (you should be able to find a video of that pretty easily).

There's pretty much no "left" to speak of in Ukraine.

Even the "Communist" party reeks of nationalism in Ukraine. This conflict is fundamentally a crisis of national identity.

I was hoping that some people there were less nationalistic and more likely to be favoring anti-oppression theories.
