Millions for defense but not one penny for tribute!

"Now the exchange value. What can we exchange for one barrel of oil? I have a few examples that might be of interest to you. I have to confess that I was very interested when I heard these examples that I'm going to share with you, drawn from different tables and studies. Do you know, for instance, that a barrel of oil (let's assign the average price for this year in Venezuela, $26.2 a barrel - this is the average for this year in Venezuelan oil. Let's take that as a point of reference, as a benchmark.) Do you know how much a barrel of unleaded gasoline is worth? Well, a barrel of unleaded gasoline costs $30.6, without considering the taxes, and with taxes it's worth $54.14 a barrel. That is to say, one hundred percent more than a barrel of oil is worth, in the case of Venezuelan oil. Do you know how much (and forgive me for this ad) a barrel of Coca Cola is worth? A barrel of Coca Cola is worth $74.7: 303% compared to a barrel of oil. A barrel of spring water, $94.37: 360%. A barrel of milk: $150. A barrel of ice cream: $1,105: 4,250% compared to our poor little barrel of oil. A barrel of good wine is worth, you know how much?, $1,370: 450% more. This is almost laughable, but let's tell the truth to the whole world. A barrel of shampoo - $2,056; a barrel of Tabasco sauce - $2,600; a barrel of tanning oil (when you go to the beach) - $5,365: the gigantic proportion of 620% compared to our poor little barrel of oil."
President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela

Seriously, this is ridiculous. The countries belonging to OPEC should come together, cut oil production significantly and jack up the price to $500. If they do this, they could significantly improve the living standards of their poor people. Of course, the United States would find some excuse to invade the Middle East and take over the oil fields. The Americans have fighting against democracy in that region for over 50 years. It began when the CIA destroyed the nationalist government in Iran and installed a puppet regime. The new dictatorship turned over Iran's oil to the Americans and British. The Iranian people have not forgotten this. Democracy is a major threat to the Americans. It would allow the people to be in charge of their own countries. They would never sell oil at such a cheap price.

After doing that all those countries would probaly mysteriously started WMD programs and the US would head straight into them to liberate the oil.

There is one problem with this. They won't improve the standard of living in their countries. They will just stick it in their pockets, leaving the common folk to suffer. Look at Saudi Arabia. The royal family is stupid rich, but the average person is not. Iraq was the same way.

What do Iraq and Saudi Arabia have in common?

They were both supported by the US.

What we need is an oil-rich country who's governement hasn't been overthrown or imposed by the US, but those are getting harder and harder to find....
