This is a somewhat old article, and a bit insignificant, but I think it really illustrates how callous the people in power in the U.S. really are.

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) wants kids to learn early in life that there's no such thing as a free lunch. To make sure they absorb that lesson, he's proposing that low-income children do some manual labor in exchange for their subsidized meals.

On Saturday, Kingston, who is vying to be his party's nominee in Georgia's Senate race next year, spoke at a meeting of the Jackson County Republican Party about the federal school lunch program.

Under that program, children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty line are eligible for free meals. Students from families with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level can receive lunches at reduced prices.

But on Saturday, Kingston came out against free lunches, saying that children should have to pay at least a nominal amount or do some work like sweeping cafeteria floors.

"But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria -- and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money. But think what we would gain as a society in getting people -- getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch," he said. Scum is the only word that describes folks like this.

I get a subsidized lunch, and I have for all of my years in school. I'm well aware that it comes from taxpayers. And you know what? It's better to feed me and other young adults and kids than funding things like coup d'etats abroad and nuclear missiles.

Aid Committés wanted to avoid giving help to sufferers that didn't work. Rules were set up that demanded only 10% of the aid were to be given away as pure hand-outs, and in those cases it was to be only people physically unable to work. The remainder were to be given as compensation for completed work, like road improvements and various things associated with improving agriculture. In the end those Aid Assistance Works were mostly symbolic things to mark that one didn't want to see begging and laziness, but that labour was required for help. Road improvements and similar were not possible to be done in the northern counties during the winter, and nevertheless the compensations were sometimes set so low that they were not liveable. In the end the Aid Assistance Works mostly ended up as handicraft, where vast amounts of objects were manufactured for the principle without ever being of any worth or use." -On assistance to the counties of northern Sweden during the 1867-1869 famine.

This sounds vaguely familiar to what a Scottish friend of mine said was going on during the Thatcher years....

I'm waiting for these politicians to try to live like they're mandating others to.

I'm quite skeptical of the liberal solutions too. In their view, Barack Obourgeois will save the day by granting big corporations some lovely Obailouts.

Haha, see what I did there? Pretty clever, eh?

Actually, there is such a thing as a free lunch if you're a landlord or a factory owner.

Or how about we make these politicians live what they're mandating. They're definitely very detached from reality.

Lamp-post and rope-based solutions? Are you talking of hangings?

Yep. I'm saying that a war between the elites of this world and the common people has already started in many parts of the world and early skirmishes have even reared their heads over here in the hitherto cosseted West. There are a million and one localised reasons for the shit kicking off. but, at the macro-level, it comes down to diminishing resources and an unwillingness of the elites to see their share of those resources fall in line with that growing diminution. Instead, the rest of us are expected to put up with ever smaller crumbs being thrown our way.

One thing is for certain. those who control things at the moment will not give up their position other than by direct force. There will be many different strategies short of force that will occur between here and the end of the process. But, in the end, that is what it will come down to. It'll end in socialism or a return to the various forms of overt fascism that was the norm of the previous several thousand years.

I'm not necessarily that hopeful. But I have to hope.

I want justice to be served too, but talking about mobs lynching people isn't going to attract people to our cause.

These people make me sick. Fucking backwards right wing upper-middle class white men think they work so fucking hard and blast the poor when they get a little help. They wouldn't know real work if it hit the upside they're fucking face.

Fuck helping the poor but lets fucking fund the shit out of corporations who fuck over the American worker when they take huge fucking gambles

How low can these bastards get ? I bet he never had to worry about being fed as a child but yet thinks he has the right to question kids getting free meals because they come from a family who are not at the top of the pile!!
