What pisses me off the most is they're people who believe that isn't sexist

Toy shops are pretty much divided into two sections: the adventurous fun toy section, and the pink toy section. The pink toys are pretty much always "play housework" or fashion/make-up type toys, whereas the other toys cover a wide variety of activities. Obviously pink is really code for "girl" and they're not normally as blatant as having "girl stuff" emblazoned on a fucking brush and dustpan, but I think little girls are encouraged to like pink and boys are encouraged to dismiss pink toys as "girl toys" so don't even look at them. Which means that play for both boys and girls is limited and all the "girl" toys appear to be training for the life of domestic drudgery awaiting them.

The colour code was the other way around until about the 1940s or so. Pink was seen as a light red, and red was associated with violence, blood and masculine things. Blue was associated with delicate, feminine things and the Virgin Mary.
I've seen pictures of my friends and family and their kids, and all too often their daughters will be drowning in pink whilst the sons will have almost every other colour in existence.

I'm struggling (and despairing) to imagine the board room meeting that led to to this.
"We need to capture the market for little girls! What do you they like to do?" said the boss, tapping his pen against his bottom lip while reclining in a swivel chair.
"Well, my wife cleans the house a lot," said the man with a starchy gray suit and gaudy red tie.
"Brilliant! We'll sell cleaning implements... but how will they know it's for girls?" he replied.
"We could make it pink!" came a voice from a man across the table.
The others assembled shouted out more ideas: "With hearts! And flowers! And a female gender symbol with a heart instead of a circle!"
"Perfect, perfect! Then we can put "It's Girl Stuff" on the packaging! We'll be billionaires in no time!" the boss said, clapping his hands together and cackling a bit.

They either grow up red from blood or with jaundice from drinking. No matter how much they try to sell that bullshit off as "natural".
edit: what the fuck is the deal with that "g" in "girl"? i've never seen a g that looks like that, it's like it's trynig to br 3 letters at once

Oh God, I choked on my tea when I strolled down to see dust-pans and other cleaning utensils. *Bork*

I remember when I was a little boy I loved to help clean the house. I particularly liked using the dust pan and broom to sweep up the floor and using a feather duster on all of the furniture. Guess I was into 'girl stuff.' I still enjoy cleaning, actually.

I get the feeling that there was less marketing involved and more Chinese sweatshop/mass production of what is probably a stereotype (or misunderstanding) about western society. (The reverse context would be a crappy American firm producing miniature chopsticks and stuffed dragons for Chinese kids.) So I am not sure how sexist this is per se or rather how much it is a consequence of outsourced consumer culture by American retailers, ie discount stores, that deal in quantity and do very little marketing themselves.
I suppose the only thing you can do is to not patronize the retail outlets that are too cheap to even care about what it is they are selling. The fact that something so obvious could make it on a shelf like that indicates a more general absence of concern, and as such you could not trust them with important things like contaminated food, medicine or toys.
