View Full Version : Turning a screen into a monitor into a tv!

So my sister is moving out and for basically all my life we've been sharing a room. When I got an HD tv a few years ago I told her she could take it when she moves out. So the day's here and upon finding out I'd be TV-less I started looking for cheap tv's or alternatives. My sister also had this HP laptop that was basically destroyed by a virus, so she kindly gave it to me and I started researching on how to convert it into a monitor/tv.

So I'm making something like this, with a motherboard that will convert the screen into a monitor complete with rgb/vga, hdmi, dvi, audio in, and audio out ports. Here is one in action (you can skip to around 6mins30s to see it working):

It works good and can output sound. So now that we have that clear, I have a small comcast sort of cable box that outputs tv through a cable like this:

The monitor dosen't have an input for that, and as I see it all that is being output is picture and sound. Other devices like playstations, and HD tv boxes can output the exact same thing via HDMI:

In the living room we have a cable box that outputs in such a way, both HD and not in HD. So I was wondering if there was any cable I could buy that has the head of a tv cable on one end and an hdmi head on the other. If not that maybe some sort of converter link with a plug for slot for tv and an hdmi head. Basically any external piece of hardware that will make my cheap monitor tv compatible.
This probably seems very out of place on a leftist forum but I figured it's in non-political, and everyone here is intelligent in something so I'm hoping someone with more knowledge on this than me can help. I thank you in advance for your contributions and if you are interested in doing this yourself I can give you some links maybe.
