View Full Version : Getting back into playing chess

I remember playing chess somewhat when I was in high school. I was really terrible, and even at the medium difficulty level, I lost pretty much every game I played on the internet.
Fast forward to the present, I decide to get back into the chess scene, and lo and behold! Out of roughly 7-8 medium-level games I've played so far, I've managed to win 3 of those games! (If I remember correctly) I just got done playing an online game where I won in quite dominant fashion. The games that I did lose, I wasn't at 100% mental capacity. I plan on getting a few dozen more games under my belt until I can start dispatching the medium level opponents on a regular basis. So is anyone else here a fan of chess? Has anyone else recently gotten back into playing chess? For those of you who are chess veterans, please do your best to refrain from chuckling at my noob comments. Or go ahead and laugh. I don't care.

I haven't played chess in almost a year though at one point I had an Elo rating of 1800 (or something around that number, I don't know what it would be like know because I haven't taken part in any tournaments since), I used to beat almost everyone I played. I played an International Master at school (I was beaten easily, though he did say I was a very good player. So technically I am a very strong chess player but when I first started I was probably not very good. Just keep practising and you will get better. Oh I never play at full mental capacity because I don't really need to. What are your favourite openings?

Favorite openings..... well, right now I'm too much of a noob to know all the openings and all the defenses and everything. I don't really have any favorite openings right now.
Update:
Since I started this thread, I've even won a game on "advanced" difficulty, and this victory itself was pretty dominant. I had seven pieces left at the end of the game, while my computer opponent had just his king and pawn.

For white I like the Kings Indian Attack, while for black I like the Kings Indian Defence and the Pirc Defence. Good job for winning!

I can totally kick ass at Battleship!
Seriously though, I do enjoy a nice game of chess. There's such great poetry in the game.

Always up for a game of chess. I still harbour the dream of being the perfect renaissance man.

Something that's really starting to bug me. When I go onto Yahoo chess, it seems that every time I try to play someone, 6 times out of 10, they won't start the game. They'll just sit there. Why does this happen? It happens with all sorts of players, with all different rankings.

I've tried so many times to get people to teach me to play chess and then after about five minutes I just start sabotaging the game because I'm so insanely bored.
Never gonna happen.

It probably has something to do with the servers or chess software but I don't really know.

RevLeft should arrange a game of Monopoly one day. Winner gets restricted to OI.

Have you tried chess.com? Hella revlefters used to use that. I don't think the games are live though, unfortunately, but every so often you get people who'll sit and play a whole game.

Hahaha no worries. I think the last time I played was when I was eight.
