If you've read it, what did you think of it/would you recommend it? I hear its somewhat popular within the left because the author criticizes the New Atheist movement and exposes its elitism and overall apologia for US imperialism. As an atheist myself, I can't fucking stand people like Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins et al, nor have I ever understood their fame. And holy shit are they smug. I wish there were more books exposing the hypocrisy of New Atheism, so if anyone here knows any other good ones, please mention them. Thanks.

Yes, it's great. I loved it. Hedges is a Christian but a lot of the material he draws on is from art and literature often by atheists.

I'd recommend Terry Eagleton's The God Debate for a slightly sharper polemic & a very interesting take on Christian thought from a non-believer.

I've not read it tbh but i think i may have to grab myself a copy. Im always up for reading things critical of the new atheists.

Sam Harris especially pisses me off with his atheism/secularism as a cloak for imperialism. He needs a fucking smack.

Somebody say smack (itching)?
I tend to side with the royalist-atheist post modernist kick, you know that old song and dance.

I find Hedges to be a depressing author.

I'd like to read it because I read Hedges's column often and I deeply respect him for his rare journalistic integrity, although his writing style is very much a product of his dreary, puritanical, rural Northeastern upbringing. His father was a liberal Presbyterian minister defrocked for wedding gays.

I've heard others say the same thing about his writing style -- I suppose it's true. Doesn't really bother me, but I'm a pretty fast reader/skimmer, so have probably skipped some of his more boring moments.

Chris Hedges is basically Camus writing non-fiction.

But to address books exposing New Atheism, I do not have one that is direct like Chris Hedges, but the book by Robert Pape called Dying to Win and Cutting the Fuse will dispel many myths that are told by New Atheists, Sam Harris in particular.

But if you or do do not have a library near you or too poor to buy a book, then listen to this lecture.
Crap, I need more posts to post a link.
Just look up "Prof. Robert Pape on the motivation of suicide terrorism" or use this KDNCwjbGOp4.
