But I feel such a coward, I hate pain, I'd fear getting hit by police sticks and pepper spray.

Nothing to do than face it, its the best thing of getting your ass kicked by cops, its always a lot less bad than you imagined (esp if it happens in a riot situation where you are already high on adrenaline). It's really illuminating (unless you get a beating on say the policestation, where you can't fight back, that just plainly sucks).
