Unfortunately, these rebels do not wish to usher in a socialist revolution but a typical African-style regime change triggered by tribal loyalties that have emerged in the government's bureaucracy.

Did they claim to be socialist to begin with though? I don't recall the SPLM making claims of being anything but a nationalist group.

The SPLM nor the SPLA wished to usher in a socialist revolution, despite their Maoist-sounding nomenclature, but a bourgeois revolution replacing the North Sudanese bourgeoisie with a native bourgeoisie. The enthusiasm with which the West received their independence aptly shows their true colors.

I know, but I'm saying why point that out if they never declared themselves to be socialist? I believe at some point in their foundation in the 80s they paid lipservice to some progressive ideals but it wasn't something they particularly took seriously, much less after it became irrelevant from the 90s an onwards.
I don't really think anyone considered them to be anything else. I think sympathy for South Sudan from some of the left originated more from concern over killings by the Sudanese government there and in Darfur than some ideological similarity.
For what it is worth, back when their independence was declared after the referendum, I think everyone was pretty much waiting to see when this would happen.

Yes, I agree with your statement. In the meantime, it has been difficult for me to actually determine the ideology of the SPLM as their Wikipedia page describes their ideology as "New Sudan" and South Sudanese nationalism which leads me to suggest that they are right-wing bourgeois no doubt. The left must always be careful in supporting national liberation, self-determination movements as "nationalism" and "self-determination" were reactionary concepts in their inception and have been used by reactionaries ever since although not exclusively.

I would suggest that you're going about this in completely the wrong way...

Yes, my bad. All sides on this conflict are reactionary and the opposing ideologies aren't worth discussing because neither directly fulfills the needs of South Sudan's workers nor will cause any socialist revolution in South Sudan for the near future.
