So a couple of like minded friends and I have decided to created a left wing political club at my high school. We have had a pretty good start so far and I feel we will be fully operational in no time. However, one of our biggest problems is that we cannot decide on a name for our group. Our ideologies range from pure anarchist to syndicalist to left communist to leninist to social democratic. We cannot have a name that is too moderate because we need to show that we are different from other groups, but at the same time we can't be to revolutionary so that we don't actract attention from the authorities at school (we are also openly against the current school system). We have thought of foreign names, which effectively keep us away from getting noticed by the school because they don't know their meaning, but also retain their revolutionary meaning in the other language (for example Pravda or Spartakusbund). However these names never fully succeed in representing all of our ideologies. Can someone please help us, it's really important and our school needs more representation for the revolutionary left!

However these names never fully succeed in representing all of our ideologies.!

Then combine the sounds of all your ideologies together and try to make a name from it!

For example to combine pure anarchist to syndicalist to left communist to leninist to social democratic make it "Puanhistsyncomlensocdem's".!!! (Or something else that sounds cool!!;))

Anyway brainstorm with your comrades and make up and decide on a name that your group like!

Good luck!:)

First, kick the social democrats out. Then describe your goals to us and I think I can help. Student unionism, education about "left wing" politics, a specific injustice in your school, etc.... Aim precedes name, because name is informed by aim

Firstly, is it a merely "leftwing political club", or is it for revolutionary ideologies?

You could go for something that doesn't sound too political at first - like Rise Like Lions or Red Yeti or something else that encourages people to ask you for more info - that gives you an opportunity to talk about your politics.

Social democrats are not part of the revolutionary left. That's probably contributing to your problem...

As for a name suggestion, I like the idea of creating an acronym out of something like LEFT or ENGELS (would suggest Marx, but good luck trying to find something that starts with an X). Barring that, any old "Students for ______" would work. "Marxist Youth" is easy, but I feel like that won't be liked by everyone. What names have come up in discussion that were well-received?

Wertkritik?
Socialist Students' Organization?

Actually though, one thought on this:

but at the same time we can't be to revolutionary so that we don't actract attention from the authorities at school (we are also openly against the current school system).
Why not? The best thing to happen to my high school organization was the administration's attempt to shut us down. As Mao put it, "To be attacked by the enemy is not a bad thing but a good thing." If you're seriously against the current school system, why hide? Putting your conflict out in the open will help you find other like-minded students. Trying to hide behind a warm-and-fuzzy facade will only deter those who might agree with you, and attract those who are interested in a warm-and-fuzzy accommodation with the aforementioned system.

How about Komsomol? That's the name of the Soviet Communist Youth League. I doubt any of the administration will be aware of that term.

No offense, but do you really think that if the administration cared, they wouldn't just look up a translation?

Also, if you're going for that type of group anyway, aren't they going to find out eventually?

I think choosing name in another language to obscure the organization's ideology is a silly idea, as the above poster said. The school can just Google it, and probably will on the virtue of it being a word they don't know. I recommend something big-tent but clearly revolutionary leftist like "Anti-Capitalist" as mentioned above.

I second that idea.

I guess you could use the name "The Student Union for Socialism" or something similar like "The Socialist Student Union" etc.

There is another possible naming method you could choose that isn't that common in the west. You could take inspiration from the early 20th century chinese anarchist organisation the Society of the Cock Crowing in the Dark and have a name that's quite ominous. Im of course not saying to take that name but the style.
