So apparently some people with the Great Plains Tar Sands Resistance banner-dropped at the building of a corporation supporting Keystone XL. A small amount of glitter from their banner fell on the floor and now they're being charged with a "terrorist hoax" (it's being alleged that the glitter was supposed to come off as some dangerous, terrorist substance), and now they face up to 10 years in jail. Seriously, what a load of bullshit. Just goes to show how far out of the way the government is going to prosecute environmentalists.

pretty much any engagement along animal / earth struggles will label one a terrorist and add charges

No, but it does surprise me that they actually found a way to turn glitter into a 10 year sentence without most people batting an eye.

initial charges are often outrageous as they are meant to intimidate but they'll almost certainly be dropped.

Why are people not up in arms over shit like this? It's a blatant show of the state flexing it's power over protesters.

This wasn't even a exciting protest action or a powerful show of disobedience. They literally put up a banner. When the state isn't even hiding it's bullshit anymore and people still don't give it a reaction I start to lose a little faith...

because shit like this has been incredibly commonplace for a long time. i can think of a dozen cases off the top of my head where the initial charges are absurd

the state has rarely, if ever, hidden its bullshit

I'm aware it's common and the lack of reaction bothers me every time. The fact that it's common should actually be all the more reason for people to do something (although I'm aware of my hypocritical stance on this as I am a person who has done nothing about it)

Maybe hide was too extreme, let's say they've been mildly discrete. They are however literally beating us over the head with bullshit at this point.
