View Full Version : Vegans! It is that time of the year

And by that time of the year I mean that time when your carnivorous family members take great pleasure in taunting you with Turkey flesh.
What will you people be substituting your Turkey with? I am totally sick of nut roasts, so I need an alternative. I made tofurkey once and it was actually pretty good...

I'm going to be making something a bit like this (http://mouthwateringvegan.com/2013/12/03/double-stuffed-savoury-christmas-log/) (basically puff pastry stuffed with spicy lentils, nuts and mushrooms) for the main course with some nice gravy and chocolate and golden syrup pudding for dessert for Christmas dinner. Not sure about tea, but I was hoping to make a chocolate and honeycomb tofu "cheese"cake for people to eat. (When I am cooking for other people and my parents are buying the ingredients the tendency is to go a bit overboard and make as much nice food as possible since I like cooking.)

I'm an omnivore but I enjoy vegetarian and vegan meals.
One thing I used to make when I was in my freshman year of college was steamed brown rice stir-fried with soy sauce, misc veggies (carrot slices, broccoli, cauliflower mostly, in addition to whatever my room mate had that he didn't want), black pepper, and cubed tofu. Considering how cheap everything is, especially since I could get tofu by the brick at the korean store for $0.81, it was as cheap as living off Ramen Noodles but much healthier.
Am I allowed in here? Because if I am, I'm going to steal all of your recipes.

You hate the taste of vegetables? Like all vegetables? I mean, that's a lot of things to dislike the flavour of? So what you're saying is you have an individual dislike of every vegetable flavour? That's some achievement for two reasons: a) on having eaten every single vegetable in order to make that decision and b) the coincidence of disliking the flavour of them all.
Some might say that was unbelievable.

I like raw cucumbers, raw carrots, and corn-on-the-cob (not off the cob). The rest is a matter of texture, taste, or both. So, yeah, I dislike the vast majority of vegetables.
EDIT: I like tomato products (such as ketchup, and tomato soup when used in chop suey), but I don't like eating tomatoes themselves. Same with potatoes (french fries, hash browns, tater tots, etc). Like I said, texture and taste.

If your parents think that not eating animal fat is unhealthy then you should probably suggest the internet to them. Cutting dairy out of your diet is probably one of the healthiest things you could choose to do.

Cheese and milk is basically just saturated fat and saturated fat raises low density lipids. LDL's cause heart disease, most notably atherosclerosis. I imagine most doctors will tell you that. As someone who suffers from hypertriglyceridemia, I can tell you from experience that cutting animal fat from your diet is a healthy option.

TAT do you have any sources for this you'd describe as reputable? There are a load of links on google but it's difficult on google to tell what is from 'real medicine/science', and what is quackery.
I've always imagined that, in moderate doses, dairy products like skimmed milk are perfectly fine as part of a balanced diet. Seems as though there is some evidence linking dairy products in general to certain cancers and, as you say, the usual ailments caused by saturated fats, but i'm unclear on a couple of things:
a) are these risks associated with all dairy products, or specific products in particular? For example, i'd have thought that if the only dairy products you ever eat are blue cheeses, your risks of health problems would be significantly greater than if you just stick to skimmed milk, low-fat yoghurts etc.;
b) are these risks associated with high doses of dairy products, or just any consumption (including low consumption) of dairy products compared to zero consumption? Again, i'd have thought that, like most food groups, consuming relatively moderate amounts of dairy in your diet wouldn't pose any particular health risks.

Today, I went grocery shopping with my grandmother. After explaining to her that vegan meant I consume no animal products she asked me "can you eat fish?" and then later was concerned that I couldn't have orange juice. So yeah, families can tend to be pretty ignorant about veganism, just do your best Link (for example, show them vegan sources of iron) and if they still wont listen then it isn't your fault, and you can always become vegan when you're 18 while doing the best you can now.

the problem is that 'in moderation' means 'consuming only enough to not have a certain effect' like radiation, nightshade, cyanide, mold spores, etc.. you can consume them in moderation or be exposed to them 'in moderation' but the problem is, and obviously this goes with foods too, is that the exposure to substances that are harmful are usually above 'moderated levels' like when consuming animal fats its not usually a smidgen of butter or whatever the average 'dosage' is above what is healthy so with foods it is kinda pointless to even use certain things when there are alternatives that are actually *good* for you
