Ardoyne gun attack: Three police vehicles shot at in dissident 'murder attempt' in north Belfast

Three police vehicles have come under a gun attack in a suspected dissident shooting in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.

They were struck by several gunshot rounds as they travelled along the Crumlin Road near Brompton Park at around 7.10pm on Thursday evening.

Police are treating the attack as attempted murder.

No officers have been reported as injured at this time, police have said.

It's understood the shots were fired from Kerrera Street, off the Crumlin Road.

PSNI chief superintendent George Clarke condemned those behind the shooting.

"Police are treating this attack as attempted murder of officers as they were providing a service to the community of north Belfast," he said.

"It is to be utterly condemned by all right minded members of society and I urge anyone with any information to contact police immediately."

It's believed there had been was a burst of automatic gunfire in the Ardoyne area.

Over a dozen shots were fired around 100 metres away from the loyalist Twaddell camp - set up at the interface with Ardoyne.

Those in the area at the time said shots rang out as those gathered ran for cover.

A burnt car was also found in the area this evening. It's not yet clear whether the two incidents are linked.

Police are appealing for information.

DUP councillor Lee Reynolds said this appeared to be the "latest manifestation" of a growing dissident republican threat in the area.

"It's become very clear that there is a growing threat from dissident republicans, this is the latest manifestation of it," he said.

"We have always known the murderous intentions from the dissident and they are trying to insert this into the holiday season"
