South Korea's railway workers are about to launch a strike -- but based on their experience last time around, they're worried.

Their anti-union government used tactics such as criminal charges, imprisonments, suits for damages, dismissals and other disciplinary actions in retaliation against a similar strike in 2009.

The union has decided to ask for worldwide support for their campaign demanding the legal right to strike this time around and I'm writing to ask you to sign up to back them:

Their campaign is being supported by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), which is calling for a day of action on 10 December to support the Korean railway workers. (More details to come on their website (http://labourstart.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=f3995b46c18cb039818f29a32&id=4df803359f&e=4e93ef2fad).)

Yes they do -- and to prove it, we published a short book a few months ago summarizing some of the victories we've had with LabourStart campaigns over the last few years. 1. What are rights?
2. Why do you think a petition would work?

A petition? Really?

Would it kill you?

Would it kill you?

You are fundamentally misunderstanding what I am saying. I'm not saying not signing a petition is effective I'm saying that for a r-r-radical to advocate a petition to strike is idiotic.
Its sheer stupidty no two ways about it. You are literally asking the bourgeois state for them to consider to allow you to strike.
Think about it.

Yeah, I hear ya on all this petition stuff -- you and anyone else who makes the same criticism.

All I can say is that I think it has 'internal' significance -- seeing how many people are on board for whatever particular struggle, etc.

I agree that no one should put their *hopes* in a petition as being a political tool of influence against the oppressor.

what internal significance?
then whats the point if it isn't influential

OR rather than sign a petition - fight back. If the people wringing their hands over a petition went out there and supported the strike I'm sure that would speak far louder than a bunch of signatures
