So, the teacher's union is possibly going on strike in my city, and I began wondering- do you guys think that the strike would be a good opportunity to agitate? I know little about how radical the union is and I will be asking teachers about that before I make the decision, but I was wondering what you guys think.

It's important question. In Poland teachers plan to strike too. But I find it useless. If you want achive something by strike, you must strike until your demands willbe fullfiled. A few days strike makes only laugh for rulers.

I think that is the plan here, but I was wondering if there was more radical activity that you guys think I could contribute to/would it be a good time to agitate?

I'm in Portland, OR.

If there's any place in the US that is going to have radicals in the teacher union, it's Portland...

Well, it might not be a good opportunity to carry out agitation among teachers, unless you've already got an "in" (a radical or two in the teachers union), but it's probably a fantastic opportunity to agitate among other students. Hell, bring students down to the picket lines (will there be pickets?), and maybe there will be some of the type of interactions between students and teachers that school makes impossible.

If you are a student, you should try and agitate among your fellow students. Here in Brasil it is common for students to declare "student strikes" in solidarity to teachers' strikes.
And you might look very stupid if you don't have contacts/a history with those teachers, just coming up alone to them at the picket line and talking about how they need to revolutionize shit and stuff.

I agree with the rest in regards to agitating for more radical stuff amongst students but at the very least visit a picket if there is one and tell them you support their strike. It's kinda awkward just coming up to a picket but teachers get shit on a lot in the media when they strike with a load of 'oh, think of the children!' propaganda that ignores the fact that they're often trying to fight for improved conditions for students to learn in so it can be a good morale boost for them, all the better if you come with a group of students.

What exactly do you mean by 'agitate'? If you don't know much about the details of the strike, I'd try to take the opportunity to learn about it and talk with people going on strike rather than trying to 'agitate'.
Also, what difference does it make how "radical" the union is?

The issues are fairly standard- cutting direct labour hours (so teachers have to do more work at home), lessening benefits, etc...
By agitate, I mean trying to tilt people's views to be more revolutionary in nature rather than liberal.
The level of radicalization matters because that way I can determine in what ways I should present ideas, and what kind of arguments I should be making.

I understand that this is the goal of agitation, I meant more like in concrete terms, what would it mean to 'agitate' in this situation?
If you just mean should you go and talk with people on a picket line or something, I think it's always a good idea if you are able to. It seems like usually when people talk about 'agitating', though, they mean something more organized (for example writing and distributing leaflets), where it would seem important to have a pretty specific understanding of the details, including the role of the union in past strikes etc., in order for it not to be a waste of time and energy.

There were a few times I could have done this in high school when things were pretty tense between the faculty and administration, but unfortunately I just sat around in the office photocopying my ass cheeks.
