A focus on family and sexual violence in Papua New Guinea

The rate of family and sexual violence is so high in Papua New Guinea that a special conference is being held in Port Moresby to try to come up with ways to combat the problem.

The conference is being co-hosted by Medicins Sans Frontieres and includes represnetatives from PNG's Department of Health, the Department of Justice, the European Union, AusAID and service providers from 11 PNG provinces.

Ume Wainetti, the national coordinator of the Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee, says up to 68 per cent of women in PNG women are abused.

She hopes the key findings can be put into action as early as next year.
