Hawaii State Rep. Tom Brower Declares Mission Accomplished, Retires His Sledgehammer

Posted: 11/20/2013 12:08 am EST

The Hawaii state representative who has taken a sledgehammer to roughly 30 shopping carts (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/18/tom-brower-hawaii_n_4299256.html) in his crusade against homelessness announced his retirement as a vigilante on Tuesday, declaring his mission accomplished.
Neither controversy nor national attention caused state Rep. Tom Brower (D) to hang up his sledgehammer. Instead, he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, "The point that I was trying to make has been made (http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20131119_Rep_Brower_says_he_is_putting_down_his_sl edgehammer.html?id=232592861)."
"Now that the issue of shopping carts is on our minds," Brower said, "the question is are we going to move forward and try to solve it or just let it become status quo."
Brower incited national outrage when the Star-Advertiser reported (http://www.staradvertiser.com/s?action=login&f=y&id=232305491) his unconventional approach to combatting Honolulu's homelessness problem. Brower boasted of cleaning up the city by taking a sledgehammer to homeless people's shopping carts. (He apparently wears gloves and an Armani Exchange baseball cap (http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24003737/lawmaker-hammers-home-his-homeless-solution) while doing such dirty work.) If shopping carts bore a store name, he would return the carts to the store.
His self-proclaimed "tough-guy" approach (http://www.staradvertiser.com/s?action=login&f=y&id=232305491) went further. He yelled and roused sleeping homeless people at city bus stops.
"If someone is sleeping at night on the bus stop, I don't do anything," he told the Star-Advertiser. "But if they are sleeping during the day, I'll walk up and say, 'Get your ass moving.'"
Despite the extreme tactics, many Hawaii residents identified with Brower's frustration. The state has the highest rate of homelessness in the country. And, as Think Progress noted, the Aloha State "is garnering a reputation for a less-than-compassionate approach (http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/11/19/2966371/hawaii-homeless-smash/) to its homeless population."
Over the summer, Hawaii lawmakers passed a measure to buy one-way plane tickets to the mainland (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/25/hawaii-return-to-home-homeless_n_3653498.html) for a portion of the state's homeless.
But Brower's sledgehammer took the less-than-compassionate approach to a new level.
According to Hawaii News Now, one angry caller said, "What if I smash his car up with a sledgehammer 'cause I don't like what I see?" Another asked, "Who do you think you are (http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24015431/hawaii-lawmaker-drops-sledgehammer-approach) to go around using a sledgehammer on anything because you think somebody doesn't deserve it?"
Brower, who initially seemed proud of his sledgehammer ("When you are walking down the sidewalk with a sledgehammer," he told the Star-Advertiser, "people get out of your way.") seemed a touch more contrite on Tuesday.
"I guess I shouldn't use the sledgehammer," he told Hawaii News Now, "because it's a really loaded image (http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24015431/hawaii-lawmaker-drops-sledgehammer-approach)."

I'm pretty pissed off. Class warfare in the blatant form of physical violence, more so than usual.

His power fetish reeks of fascism.

I know anarcho-syndicalists try, but is there any other attempts at leftist organization concerning the homeless?

If anyone has to stick together for survival, it's the homeless, especially when rich bourgeois kids and pseudo-fascist groups and politicians go around intimidating and attacking both the individual's personal property and physical well-being.

The homeless (or any humane human) in the area should ambush him, take his sledgehammer and we'll see what happens then...

I was afraid someone was attacking homeless people with seldgehammers. I lived in Florida for a while and it was really common for teenagers to beat homeless people to death out of boredom. There was also a string of homeless people being set on fire while sleeping on the beach. People are fucking scum. Fuck this guy
