How does a Marxist economy work?

It doesn't, there is no such thing as 'a marxist economy'. Communist society will be the destruction of 'economy'.
The end result of the marxist critique of capitalism posits a situation where the working class
1 - takes all production into its own hands directly;
2 - generalises its own conditions throughout the population.
This will
3 - lead to the end of class society (because there is now no longer a difference between a 'working class' and a 'capitalist/owning class');
4 - and the whole of society will collectively manage the decisions about what should be produced and how.
That's it in outline at least.
