View Full Version : American POWs still in Vietnam?!

I've heard rumors and seen the occasional news story that American POWs captured during the Vietnam war may still be held in camps. This doesn't seem totally unrealistic, as there were still people coming home in the 1980s. Do any of you know anything more about this?

1,875 Americans are still missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, though over 450 were at sea/over water losses: Vietnam - 1,429 (VN-499; VS-930); Laos - 383; Cambodia - 55; Peoples Republic of China territorial waters - 8. The League seeks the return of all US prisoners, the fullest possible accounting for those still missing and repatriation of all recoverable remains.

I highly doubt there are still POWs in Vietnam

but I did watch something the other day on the Discovery channel in which a Japanese soldier who served in WW2 in the Phillippines had been there since 1973 cuz no one ever told him the war was over, and he had survived by stealing from a nearby town

I agree...but it's not utterly impossible.

No it was several Japanese soldiers, only one survived throughout all those years, they heard that the war was over on the radio but they thought it was only propaganda by the US.

Yeah, and we prolly have a bunch of disgruntled Nazis in Guantanamo.

I also heard rumors that they're using the American POW's as slave labor in Vietnam.

When the peace treaty was signed North Vietnam agreed that they would release all POWs from the "Hanoi Hilton". Like Malte said, you've watched too many Rambo movies.

the only remotely good rambo was when we was killing all those pigs, everything else was lame. Im sure there were plenty of POWs but im sure they are dead by now. Starved or tortured or killed themselves. I woulda just killed myself. Seems alot better than staying in a tiny cage, or having those lil bamboo shoots shoved up their fingernails. Ouch

I've never seen Rambo, but its probably retarded...

Yeah, I've heard about that Japanese guy - Hiroo Onoda. Even when his own brother got on a loudspeaker and told him that the war was over, he decided that the Americans had kidnapped his brother or were imitating his voice.

Only a few years ago someone, (I think they were Chinese) came out of hiding in a forest, wondering if Hitler had died yet. You can imagine how annoyed someone like that would be having wasted half their life hiding from....well nothing.
