So if these trade union guys are getting gunned down right and left by the government, wouldn't it be a good idea for FARC to step in and offer protection? Or at worst offer some kind of retaliation?

Farc can only enter on some territories, if they try to go closer to big cities they might get a big loss of men.
you might also say they are not doing so good in there fight against the government troops, they have lost some big leaders.
But the fight continues.

FARC and the government are under peace negotiations. From what you posted, we can see how promising is 'peace' with the state.

FARC doesn't get a whole lot of traction with urban workers, I think they've also been responsible for their share of dead trade unionists

The FARC EP and the urban trade union movement are pretty divided.

The FARC grew out of the CP but developed its own rural base, which is a bit complicated. Not sure if the ELN has a more positive relationship.

This is something I think that needs to be leaned by the various groups.

They can offer concessions for the moment but say 10-20 years down the road your back to having the same conditions that gave rise to guerilla warfare.

But having some family that have went through this kind of struggle I know how it can drain you and the people around you.
