Hello
I'm a 14 year old student from cyprus.I read a copy of the communist manifesto from a friend and then started reading more and more books about the subject.
Politics in cyprus are rather complicated. Our politicians rather than debate about political ideologies prefer to blame each other about who's fault the Turkish invasion was and take shots at each other whenever they can about it.
The communist party (AKEL) even though its the second most popular in the country doesn't really promote communism.
Nearly every person that votes for the communist party considers themselves communists but the minority actually really understands it and an even smaller percentage would support a revolution if it came.
I'm also a supporter of Omonia Nicosia the biggest leftist team in cyprus.

Welcome :)
If you have political questions, you can ask them in the Learning forum. That's why it's there after all!
If you have questions about your account, don't hesitate to send me a PM or ask here.
I suppose AKEL could be likened to the Dutch SP: Every member considers him/herself a "socialist", but almost no one knows what that actually means... What are your own politics though, if anything specific?

Does AKEL have a base in the unions? And what leftist organization do you identify with in your country, if any?

AKEL is closely related with the trade union PEO if that's what your asking. When AKEL was outlawed under British rule PEO was the only legal left wing political entity that could express AKEL's views. Back then AKEL was a step before becoming a marxist leninist party unlike now that AKEL is focused mainly around the Cyprus Dispute and who's to blame, constantly taking shots at DISY (the conservatives) about the division of the island. In cyprus trade unions and political parties are closely aligned so AKEL and PEO maintain a close relationship.
I used to be in AKEL's youth wing EDON but left because I didn't like that AKEL was controlling us so much and rather than turning us into communists they were turning us into Cypriot patriots. I am now in a smaller but more communist organization, ERAS.

Gia sou friend. I am from the invading part :)
Try to read more into dialectical materialism before aligning yourself somewhere. Marxism, as I see it, is not to be simplified, although it is good to realize where the interests of the working class lies early.
A lot of "militant" Marxist movements, which are the case in my country Turkey and I believe in Greece as well(which probably would influence Cyprus to a large extend), has a militant and rather simplifying attitude which makes them unpopular. It is important to make sure some people are at least reading how the Marxist methodology works before jumping into simplified conclusions. People get quiet suprised that Marxism is not about doing a revolution because it is cool.
As a teenager, that is how I got invovled in revolutionary action.
