PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is threatening water and bread for unpatriotic inmates who deface or vandalize the American flag.
"Ten inmates are currently on bread and water for this infraction," Arpaio said.
Arpaio said he has implemented an American flag campaign in his jails.
Each cell is getting a sticker of an American flag. Any inmate who vandalizes the flag will be punished with the restricted diet.
In keeping with the patriotic theme, Arpaio has ordered that the playing of God Bless America and the National Anthem be done daily in every jail facility over the public address system and for all the inmates, regardless of national origin, to hear and sing-a-long.
The sheriff's office employs more than 600 men and women who are veterans representing past service in all branches of the armed forces.
The patriotic campaign will cover the Fourth Avenue Jail, Durango Jail, Estrella Jail, Lower Buckeye Jail, Tent City Jail, Central Intake and Towers Jail.

Yet again, another 'what the fucking hell' moment. Scary that these are the sorts of fuckers in office.

More pointless brainwashing attempts I see. I don't see how this, combined with other common incarceration 'breaking' techniques, is not inhumane and psychologically damaging. The joints already a disease infested death trap, let's get these fine and upstanding citizens psychologically fragile and unstable and lower the immune systems further. Nothing bad could ever happen.

There's been challenges to him (including DoJ charges) but Apario is untouchable it seems- even with keeping inmates outside in the Arizona heat. Combined with getting support from the racists living in the area and diluting minority votes, he's pretty much set to be re-elected without fault until he steps down on his own accord. Plus all the wingnuts supporting him from outside the state.
As disgusting this is, what's worse is that you can find some people who think he's doing a good job. Mexican and Native communities in Maricopa County have to deal with his posse of thugs harassing them (in rural areas outside of Phoenix of course, in the city you have to deal with the city cops).

Scary that they have support to keep them in office. These are the kind of people who would become full-blown fascists if there was a major crisis in the capitalist system.

I'm sure no one will resent this and will become patriotic Americans that love God and liberty. Unceasingly singing patriotic songs that mention the 'land of the free' etc in prison is also not totally ironic.

I think Arpaio is just looking for any excuse to punish and humiliate the inmates and imposing his 'merica #1 bullshit is a bonus for this sadistic fuck

BOW DOWN TO THE FLAG OR STARVE.
I don't understand why people in this thread keep talking about the DPRK. You people do realize that it's America, that has more people incarcerated than any other country on the planet? Ever in history? Not by a little bit, I mean, by a fucking mile.
More than the DPRK, fSU, China, etc? America has always had re-education as part of their penal lesson plan; why do you think they only feed you that bullshit, watery, soy and grease shit? Why do you think they keep you in a disorienting, prolonged, and chronically sleep deprived state? It's to break you psychologically and to keep you pacified and docile, it's the exact same thing the US military does to both recruits and POWs. Ever heard of US Army Rangers walking off mountain faces trying to stick dollar bills in fictional trees? Shit's no joke, that's sleep dep. The whole point is to break you, re-train you and then release you. Why do you have to do all of those bullshit jobs around the prison? What's the point of those, eh?
I mean the real point of prison is to take us wild, uncontrollable, "predatory," assholes aka poor people and try to "iron us out," psychologically so we can become reformed, contrite, proper, docile, conforming part of American society. Social pacification. America was born out of and profits by treachery, deceit, mayhem and violence but if you are part the lowest of the low ([lumpen]-proletariat) and do the same thing, boom, now you're a criminal.
My point? All of this is political, this is how they keep the workers in check. Incarceration is just another socio-political tool for the bourgeoisie to keep the poor, the dangerous, the minorities, etc. in check. Doesn't even matter if it's prison, jail or mental asylums. I recommend Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington, for further information on the asylums bit.
I don't mean to come all out of pocket and just jump your neck but I think it's important that we view America as it should be. Fuck this notion, that the fSU, DPRK, China, etc. are/were brutal dictatorships and America is just some bastion of freedoms with a couple of flaws and historical guffaws. No. That's bullshit and I think it's something we need to shake out of people's heads. It shouldn't be like "oh, well, America does certainly have it's problems but those are dictatorships, you see, we just have a problem with bad apples." No, this is a dictatorship, it has been a dictatorship and a lot of fucked up shit has gone down. I don't see this as being any different really then reports of the US military playing the Barney song on repeat and subjecting the POW to heavy sleep dep in the process. It's basically about the same thing.

Making Native Americans sing, rise for the flag, etc. bothers me the most.
It's wrong for anyone, but Native Americans were exploited and experienced what many historians now consider an attempt at genocide. Why in the world should anyone, especially a Native American, be forced to do these things?

Does the overpowering situational irony of forcing people into singing about the abundance of liberty in their land escape these people? It's something I would expect to see in a fictional work trying to clumsily make a point.

*sigh*
I'm sadly not very surprised. This is Joe Arpaio we're talking about. The self-proclaimed "America's Toughest Sheriff". This is the same twit whose done everything from tampering with evidence to making his inmates wear bunny slippers and pink underwear. He is one of the biggest assholes in the country and further makes the case that police deserve nothing less than bricks to the head.
And yeah, he DOES keep getting re-elected time after time. The only way he will ever stop being Sheriff is litigation or death.

Err, what exactly is offensive about that?
Of course none of us can diagnose Arpaio over the internet but from what I have heard and seen of him, I would not be surprised if he was either psychopathic or sociopathic. However, I feel that his mental state is not really the issue at hand here as it is the capitalist system and it's prison regime which ultimately gives rise to people like him to gain positions of power and authority in society.

Is he an idiot though?
What in your view is idiocy?
According to the original definition of the word in ancient Greece, an idiot was someone who either lacked an interest in or knowledge of politics. Politically speaking from the point of view of the ruling class he serves, Arpaio is actually doing something quit clever, breaking prisoners down psychologically so that they become passive and docile and no longer have any will to resist. That may seem repugnant to you and me but to Arpaio and the ruling class he serves it makes perfect logical sense.

It was from some news channel, Al Jazeera English I think and it was many years ago so I don't have it on hand. It showed him giving the news crew a tour of his prison and the look of delight on his face in what he was doing and the animated way in which he talked about his prison regime gave me the distinct impression he enjoyed it. One of the signs of psychopathy is to enjoy making others suffer.
However, I'll repeat the fact that I nor anyone else cannot actually diagnose him over the internet so this really is a moot point.

No. You fail to take into account the context of class here. Racism, patriotism and nationalism are all perfectly logical from the point of view of the ruling class and Arpaio serves that class. How is that difficult to understand?
It would be idiotic for a worker to support racism, patriotism and nationalism because it does not serve his/her objective class interests. Racism, patriotism and nationalism do serve the objective class interests of the ruling class so it would be idiotic of them to discard them.

I'm not a psychologist so I cannot really say for sure, it may well be the case.
Regardless of whether he is a psychopath, sociopath or a sadist the main issue for me is the wider context of how prisons are run in the US. All prisons operate brutal and inhumane regimes and it is this which gives rise to the likes of Arpaio. Ultimately the issue is a structural one and that point stands whether the person running the prison in mentally unbalanced or not.

Have you considered the possibility that the way law enforcement institutions work creates an environment in which sociopaths/psychopaths/sadists can flourish?
In this way, the systemic pathology of the system fosters pathology on an individual level, adding to the current order's other failures.
