....or at least his lyrics depict as being one

You don't know what's in store
But you know what you're here for
Close your eyes, lay yourself beside me
Hold tight for this ride
We don't need no protection
Come alone, we don't need attention

Open your hand, take a glass
Don't be scared, I'm right here
Even though, you don't roll
Trust me girl, you wanna be high for this

Take it off, you want it off
Cause I know what you're feeling
It's okay, girl, I feel it too
Let it be, baby breathe
I swear I'm right here
We'll be good, I promise, we'll be so good

Open your hand, take a glass
Don't be scared, I'm right here
Even though, you don't roll
Trust me girl, you wanna be high for this
You wanna be high for this
You wanna be high for this
You wanna be high for this
You wanna be high for this...

Been on another level since you came, no more pain
Look into my eyes, you can't recognize my face
You're in my world now, you can stay, you can stay
But you belong to me, you belong to me

If it hurts to breathe, open the window
Oh, your mind wants to leave but you can't go
This is a happy house, we're happy here
In a happy house, oh this is fun

Music got you lost
Nights pass so much quicker than the days did
Same clothes, you ain't ready for your day shift
This place will burn you up
But baby it's okay and my niggas next door
They be working in the trap, so get louder if you want
So don't blame it on me that you didn't call your home
So don't blame it on me girl cause you wanted to have fun

Bring the 707 out

Two puffs for the lady who be down for that
Whatever, together
Bring your own stash of the greatest, trade it
Roll a dub, burn a dub, cough a dub, taste it
Now watch us chase it
With a handful of pills, no chasers
Jaw clenching on some super-sized papers
And she bad in a head band
Escaping, her van is a Wonderland
And its half-past six
Read stars cause time don't exist
But when the stars shine back to the crib
Superstar lines back at the crib
And we can test out the tables
Got some brand new tables
All glass and its four feet wide
But it's a must to get us ten feet high
She give me sex in a handbag
I got her wetter than a wet nap
And no closed doors
So I listen to her moans echo
"I heard he do drugs now"
You heard wrong I been on it for a minute
We just never act a fool
That's just how we fuckin' livin
And when we act a fool
Its probably cause we mixed it
Yeah I'm always on that okey dokey
Them white boys know the deal
Ain't no fuckin phony
Big O know the deal
He the one who showed me
Watch me ride this fucking beat
Like he fuckin told me
"Is that your girl, what's her fucking story?"
"She kinda bad but she ride it like a fucking pony"
I cut down on her man
Be her fuckin story
Yeah I'm talking 'bout you man
Get to know me
Ain't no offense though
I promise you
If you a real man, dude, you gon' decide the truth
But I'm a nice dude with some nice dreams
And we could turn this to a nightmare: Elm Street

La la la la la la la la
I'm so gone so gone
Bring out the glass tables
Bring the 707 out

these two songs, like some other songs, are about drugging up a girl before having sex with her

.....

I promise you gon' see
That I'm only fucking 20, girl
Amnesia
Put your mind in a dream world
What you doing in the bathroom?
I hear noises in the bathroom
Baby, it's okay
We can do it in the living room
Twisting turns in 'em, the only girls that we fuck with
Seem to have 20 different pills in 'em
They tell us that they love us
Even though they want a next man
And the next man's ***** want the third man
Eddie Murphy shit
Yeah, we trade places
Rehearse lines to them and then we fuck faces
Yeah we know just how to get a buzz
Mix it with the hash, come fuck with us
I'm raw, motherfucker, I'm raw
My love so lost in my niggas, man
These *****es can't touch what we got if they wanted
I'll plug any nigga that'll step
Man, I got 'em, yeah I got 'em
Till the ending of our credits
Life's such a movie, filmed independent, us against the city
Please don't get offended when we don't answer your calls
And if you got a problem, come and find us, we can talk about it
What's good, young ho? You about it?
Got a loft right now, you're inside it
You excited?

What you thinkin' about?

the next two songs are by far the creepiest. the former being about taking advantage of a girl that got evicted from her home, and the latter being pretty much about drug-induced gang rape

Shots of the Henny, bottles of Patron
Blunts to your face, you don't wanna sing no more, lost your C notes
Cabbed all day, took the bus back home
Evictions on your door, blame it on the weed, blame it on the booze
Blame it on the night life, light's passin' you, yeah
Just don't blame it on me, that you wanna come and party
With a nigga like me, cause I get it
You're built like a Goddess
And it seems like you been stressin'
'Specially when your nose red
From that K, special Diet Coke
You need more bread, ‎now you got no rent
You blow that money, money
You try to window shop, you blow another hundred
She's fuckin' goons in the day
Hipster nights downtown and your daddy don't know you're out

If they don't let you in
You know where to find me
Cause if you wanna go again
You can always call me
Cause all we ever do is love
Open up ya' mind, you can find the love
Girl you ain't alone
We all been alone
Baby just be honest

XO ohh, don't you forget
XO don't you worry 'bout a thing
XO we'll be everything you need, just believe
XO yea, XO and woah

I love it when your eyes are red
Ah yea, are you on my cloud yet?
Cause I got a brand new cam, can we video feed, can we POV
I wanna catch you at your best
When your hair's a mess
You look so depressed
And you're filled with regret
And you feel like you gotta go home

Cause these nights pass, so much quicker then the days did
Same clothes you ain't ready for your day shift
But you up you need money for ya' face lift
Lust over love
Is ya' mindset
Waken up with most of ya' side wet
Another room, you hear your mom cryin'
Cause she found your bag stuffed in the laundry
And the Bacardi from the last party

If they won't let you in
You know where to find me
And if you wanna go again
You can always call me
Cus all we ever do is love
Open up ya' mind you can find the love
Girl you ain't alone
We all been alone
Baby just be honest

XO Ohhhh
Don't you forget
XO
Don't you worry bout' a thing
XO
We'll be everything you need
Just believe
XO
Yeaaa
XO
Woooaaahhh

I need, I need something from you
Oh, there's so much love to pass around
There's too much love
Girl, the night's almost done
And who you came with is already gone
You said you want me
But I remember who you are
Girl, it wasn't long ago
Didn't think I'd go this far
I got a test for you
You said you want my heart
Well, baby you can have it all
There's just something that I
Need for you is to meet my boys
I got a lot of boys
And we can make you right
And if you get too high
Baby, come over here and ride it out
Oh, oh, ooh yeah
Ride it out
Oh, oh, whoa yeah
Ride it out
Ride it out
Just ride it

Oh yeah
Got you drinking out them white cups, sodas
All this shit sounds foreign to you, thick smoke, choking
Baby get familiar with the order
Just crack it, then pour it, then sip slow, then tip low
My eyes red but my brim low, that XO, she climbing
Straight to the top, forget why she there in the first place
No more crying, heart rate's low, put that rum down you don't wanna die tonight
I promise, when you’re finished we’ll head to where I’m living
The party won’t finish it’s a fucking celebration

For my niggas out tonight, and they high off Shakespeare lines
There's enough to pass around, you don't gotta wait in line
And the clocks don't work you don't gotta check the time
And the blinds don't work you don't gotta check the sky
We be going all night, til light

I got a test for you
You say you want my heart
Well baby you can have it all
There's just something that I need from you
Is to meet my boys

You've been going hard baby, now you rolling with some big boys baby
Got a lot you wanna show off baby, close that door before you take your fucking clothes off baby
Don't mind, all my writings on the wall
Thought I passed my peak, and I'll experience some fall
And all I wanna do is leave cause I've been zoning for a week
And I ain't left this little room, trying to concentrate to breathe
Cause this piff so potent, killing serotonin
In that two floor loft in the middle we be choking
On that all black voodoo, heavy gum chewing
Go on if you testing, baby if you dancing
Grab a cup of that XO, baby I been leaning
Back from the come down, girl I been fiending
For another round, don't you blame it on me
When you're grinding up them teeth and it's fucking hard to sleep

I got a test for you
You said you want my heart
Well baby you can have it all
There's just something I need from you
Is to meet my boys
I got a lot of boys
And we can make you right
And if you get too high
Baby come over here and ride it out, ride it out

Work that back til I tire out
Roll that weed, bring that fire out
Taste that lean when you kiss my mouth
Bed so wet when I eat you out
Girl's friend screaming that I'm creeping out
If they're not down, better keep em out
Ex-man hollering, keep him out
Hard to let go, I could teach you how
Take a puff of this motherfucking weed for now
Take a shot of this cognac, ease you out
Just one night, trying to fucking leave you out
Baby, baby

That north north, that up top, that OVO and that XO

I liked how there was something about his music that sounded twisted and dark but now I'm just beginning to realize how horrifying some of the shit in his lyrics actually are. I can't tell if this is some facade to go along with the themes of a nightmarish club/party scene, or this is the look into the mind of a creepy sociopath (people are speculating that he keeps himself low-key and mysterious because his lyrics are autobiographical). I want to think facade because of the way the music is presented, but at the least, The Weeknd's "persona" is that of a creepy Patrick Bateman date rapist type

I'd never heard of this guy before, but I'm listening to him now and he's actually pretty good, and I normally hate R&B-type music.

I wouldn't say it's rape, nothing says he's forcing anybody, it even says in that one song about having a gang bang that her friends weren't down so they were shown the door. So it would seem implied that she consents, that she is "down." Same with the second song you quote "two puffs for the lady who be down for that". The third song you quote is saying the woman is spending too much time partying that she can't pay her bills. It doesn't seem like he's saying he's trying to take advantage of her because she's being evicted, it seems more a criticism of "gold-diggers". You can disagree with that lifestyle and could think it's creepy but to say that it's rape? Yeah I'm not seeing it.

It seems like what you're saying is that if there are drugs involved it's rape. I couldn't disagree more, next time you're about to have sex pack a bowl with your partner and see how much funner it might be. Obviously there's a point where someone is way too wasted to be able to make that decision but all I see when I see these lyrics is a guy flashing around his money, the copious amounts of drugs he has to consume, and the fact that he likes to have sex and that he thinks you should have it with him.

I like how it has a darker, more grim sound than a lot of other R&B

You must have missed the lines where he talks about her 'not being able to recognise his face' and that 'she belongs to him', her 'body saying no but her mind saying yes', how she 'can make all the noise she wants but the neighbouring folks won't hear' and how 'It's her fault because she didn't call her home and wanted to have fun'. There is no philosophical gymnastics required to figure out what those lines mean and imply.Honestly, I can't understand how some people can even manage to defend this wreck - It sounds like shit you'd expect from a chapter of The Rapist Files.

You literally can't understand how I can listen to a song like that and ignore the lyrics? I've never even heard the song before. I've listened to one song by him(none of the ones mentioned), it's not like I care for the music, I think it's just being WAY misinterpreted. For example when he says you look into my eyes and can't recognize me it's right after he's saying he's really high and doesn't feel pain anymore. Which to me is saying he's a whole different person when he's high and that he gets high to get rid of some pain he has. He objectifies women in his songs a lot, a lot of people do without being rapists("you're my girl" can sound good and be meant in a positive way just like "you belong to me" can. But you can easily turn that around on somebody because it's possessive).

When it's saying your mind wants to leave but you can't go because it's such a happy house what immediately came to my mind when reading those lyrics were The Eagles' Hotel California at the end when they say "you can check out any time you like but you will never leave." If you didn't know that song is also about living in a party type environment with such excesses too. She can't breathe the sex is so awesome, but deep down she really wants to leave. But she can't(and not because he's forcing her) leave of her own will, she's not strong enough to leave the big happy house with the awesome sex, the crazy drugs, and amazing music. That's why he says don't blame me, you did it to yourself. What's she trying to escape from? Maybe the day shift she didn't have her clothes for? It makes sense because the nights go by quicker than the days meaning she's probably having fun because time moves slower when you're not having fun right? The nights(plural, not her first visit?) wouldn't go so much quicker than the days if she's being raped right, rape isn't fun. Get louder because nobody can hear you would seem creepy if you think he's talking about rape. But what if he's not? Then it's just him saying let loose, don't hold back.

I've been a big fan of The Weeknd for a very long time now because I thought the dark and bleak tone of hedonistsic themes you usually hear in upbeat pop songs was neat. I think the lyrics can be ambiguous but these songs seem to follow the premise that "yeah, he's taking the drugs too. but he's experienced and has a tolerance - thus, fully self-conscious of the situation - while she is a first time user who just wanted to hang out with the cool guys and is completely delerious from all the drugs". If you're an experienced dug-user taking drugs with a first-timer, I'm pretty sure that the agency to properly consent is gone.

If anything, the lyrics may not be as rape-y as much as they're predatory as fuck. For example, this Michael Jackson-esque song from his newest album has predatory lyrics that sound like a would-be rapist:

Don't you shy away from me
Just sacrifice your every last inhibition
I'm on your side
Don't patronise
You know tonight
Is the only time we'll have each other
Why would you try to waste this precious time?
Cuz tonight I'll be right here
And tomorrow you won't care

This song is fucking disgusting. I literally do not see how you can listen to a song like this and ignore the lyrics - especially since it's rap.

He's actually singing, and the lyrics for these songs when they first came out were known to sound almost incomprehensible

When it's saying your mind wants to leave but you can't go because it's such a happy house what immediately came to my mind when reading those lyrics were The Eagles' Hotel California at the end when they say "you can check out any time you like but you will never leave."

it should make you think about "Happy House" by Siouxsie and the Banshees because that line is ripped from them and that Weeknd songs itself is a loop of "Happy House"

The redeeming trait for me is that none of the content in his songs are glorified, everything about the club/party culture he depicts is supposed to be "like a horror movie" (his words). It's just that now his portrayal of party/club culture resembles more like rape culture to me (maybe because the two are so intertwined). Like the song (Initiation) about gang rape sounds absolutely sinister even if you have no idea what the lyrics are. I think the problem is that a lot of teenagers who started listening to him grossly misinterpreted what it was all about.

On a side note, when I was googling all this, someone brought up an interesting point that a lot of contemprary r&b songs can sound like subtle "date rape anthems" like this one

Some of his stuff is cool, and some of it isn't. His lyrics are always pretty bad, not just sexist but melodramatic. He's a hit or miss artist for me, depending on what producer he's working with. Better than Drake for sure.
