On December 5 Professor Grover Furr will start scanning books published in Albania (and translated into English, of course) at the request of myself and others. I've decided to "democratize" this process, allowing users in various communities to decide what works shall be scanned and put online.

You can see a large amount of works already put online by Furr, myself, and others (mixed in with a few non-Albanian materials) here: http://www.scribd.com/jhamelin_2/documents

To vote simply pick up to three titles from this list you'd like to see scanned.

Scan them all!!!

We can never have too much knowledge!!!!;)Scanning books, even pamphlets, takes time and is not an exciting task, hence the need to prioritize. I myself plan to scan a 630-page Soviet biography of Marx from 1989 and upload it to that page, and it will probably take more than two hours to scan.

Oh goodness ismail, all of this marxism is making me wet! :o

But if I must choose, then I think
* The Social Class Structure of the Working Class in Albania (1978)
and
* On Some Aspects of the Problem of the Albanian Woman (speeches by Hoxha and Alia, 1967)
And everything else about woman if possible

Ismail

There are five works on the list that deal with women in Albania, you'll need to list a specific title. :D

The Family and its Structure in the PSR of Albania (1990) looks interesting, though since it is from such a late date is it a revisionist text?

Ismail

The Family and its Structure in the PSR of Albania (1990) looks interesting, though since it is from such a late date is it a revisionist text? It's probably fine. Even when Stalin's statue was removed from the capital in December 1990 Alia passed it off as "we uphold Stalin, but we feel it is inappropriate to have the statue of a non-Albanian in this area."

According to Amazon, this is the table of contents:

1. The Social-Class Structure of the Family
2. The Structure of Marriage and the Family
3. The Physical-Demographic Structure of the Family
4. The Functions of the Family

The work describes itself as such: "This publication deals with current problems of the structure of the family and the trends of its changes. The qualitative and quantitative aspects of the family relations and the social class structure are analysed from a dialectical viewpoint in the phase of the complete construction of socialism in Albania. The book has mainly a sociological character and is based on national-wide figures taking into account the differences between town and country-side." It is 132 pages.

Since it's $49 for a used copy and there's only one copy available to buy, I put it as a choice to be scanned along with the rest.

Sounds good, yea I was just worried about absurd butchering of Marxism, I can handle one or two references to the "socialist" nature of the DDR

Ismail
7th November 2013, 07:26
I can handle one or two references to the "socialist" nature of the DDRFor those who don't get the reference:

"In June 1989 East German Foreign Minister Oskar Fischer became the first senior Soviet bloc official to visit Tiranë since the early 1960s. In an unusual gesture reflecting the importance the Albanians attached to cooperation with East Germany, Alia personally received Fischer. The East German news agency quoted Alia as having said that both countries were building 'socialism' and that they held 'identical' views on 'important fundamental questions of our time.' After the break with China, Albanian leaders had maintained that Albania was the world's only 'socialist' state. Alia acknowledged that East Germany, formerly treated as a 'revisionist' state by the Albanian media, was also a 'socialist' state, representing an important departure from Tiranë's previous ideological pronouncement."
(Biberaj, Elez. Albania: A Socialist Maverick. Boulder, CO: Westview Press. 1990. p. 103.)

Also:

"Tirana had shared Castro's hostility to reform and to developments in East Europe and the Soviet Union. In January 1990 the [Albanian] party's official organ stated bluntly, 'The prescriptions of the capitalist road, of perestroika and bourgeois reform are unacceptable to our people and party.' Repression against possible challenges increased. In December 1989, the government news agency quoted Castro extensively on his insistence that 'Cuba will not abandon its revolutionary principles' and on his characterization of the 'grave wound of capitalism' that the East European states were bringing on themselves.

In November [1989] Isidoro Malmierca made the first visit of a Cuban foreign minister to Albania, met with Prime Minister Adil Carcani and with Ramiz Alia. The latter insisted at this time that the Albanian people had 'bound their life to socialism,' and agreements on economic, industrial, technical and cultural cooperation were signed. Over the course of the next year, no fewer than five other delegations from Albania visited Cuba, including a return visit by the foreign minister who during his stay held a 'warm and friendly talk' with Castro."
(Mesa-Lago, Carmelo (ed). Cuba After the Cold War. Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press. 1994. pp. 49-50.)

The Albanians did continue to denounce revisionism into 1990 and ascribed the fall of the various Eastern European regimes to it, but obviously the rhetoric became incomprehensible once Albania began making its own diplomatic and economic about-faces.

Considering there's no preview I have no idea what its contents are like, but I'm willing to bet it's a large collection of Zëri i Popullit articles on how Soviet revisionism sucks.

Anything on the anti-fascist and national liberation war?One of the guys involved in scanning Albanian works actually has a work on the subject which he'll be putting up online eventually: The National Conference of Studies on the Anti-fascist National Liberation War of the Albanian People (I have this too, it's slightly interesting.)

The History of the PLA which was put online recently has whole chapters dedicated to the war: http://www.revleft.com/vb/history-party-labour-t184617/index.html?p=2683135

Albania didn't even exist until WW2.As a state Albania has only existed since 1912, as a nation and as a people the Albanians have obviously existed for centuries. Their history is full of feudal and bourgeois figures and struggles. Marx himself wrote briefly but positively about Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero.

I also actually know the context of the photo: it's Hoxha speaking at the 4th Congress of the PLA in February 1961.

Hoxha wrote a lot. Some of his memoirs were never translated into English, notably one on the events leading up to the founding of the Communist Party of Albania in 1941, which you can see on the uppermost left of this image (titled Kur lindi Partia and showing the house where the Party's establishment was proclaimed.)
