View Full Version : Is anyone else here a teetotaler?

I guess I'm not a complete teetotaler because I'll have a glass of whiskey or a bottle of beer maybe once every couple of months, maybe. But for the most part I abstain. I did a lot of drugs when I was younger and within the last few years, realized how much it was messing with my depression. I have to say, since I've cut drugs out and severely limited my alcohol intake, my depression has been kept at bay pretty well.
Anyone else here abstain from drugs? What are your reasons for doing so?

not for me. thought i was straightedge for many years, so i understand why people would want to abstain.

i couldn't be straightedge since i'm not a vegetarian and i don't necessarily have anything against promiscuous sex.

vegetarian/vegan straightedge is something different and there is sex positive straightedge. i just didn't drink or do drugs.

I am right now, but not by choice. Once I'm off probation I'll probably go on a bender.

The day the clock struck midnight and my probation officially ended, I lit up a fat bowl. Soooooo satisfying, I got extremely high since I hadn't smoked in so long. I remember that was the day that Mubarak resigned in 2011, IIRC, and I remember watching masses of people swarm into Tahrir Square on TV and being really high and just thinking, damn, I am literally watching history in the making here. This is cool as shit!

Don't smoke. Sometimes I will drink socially, but I have considered a teetotaler lifestyle. I don't think I would really miss booze that much.

I've never touched a single drug past caffeine.
Prevention is better than the cure, as they say. No problems with people who take hard drugs, but I have no intention of wasting money, physical and mental health on highs.

Never smoked or did any kind of drugs. I drink occasionally at parties or shows. Being in sports has always kept me clean I think since I enjoy competing.

What I don't understand is the contemporary militant straightedge folks (half a dozen) here where I live.
What's the purpose of lecturing me and posing as a concerned official of the ministry of health? Is my drinking a problem for that person?

im not a "teetotaler"(i had to lok that one up) since i dont care if other people smoke, drink or do other drugs but for me i do none of these things. the reason? my father was an alcoholic and died because of it and i just know, if i start drinking, with the problems that i have, i end up the same. so yeah, its not for me.

sounds a bit like missionary work and instead saving your soul they want to save you from alcohol, its dumb ether way.

That does sound nice, but I'm talking about a distinctly less healthy and edifying form of bender. (Cue Futurama joke.)

The thing is, this "militant" bit serves a purpose here since they can get all aggressive, I'd say on the border of mild physical aggression. It's just stupid and weird as hell.

No drugs, alcohol maybe once a month, quit smoking....in a longterm relationship, so no sex.

I never do recreational drugs, including alcohol. I don't even drink caffeine. (I surely get a small amount of various drugs - my dad uses wine in cooking, and I think chocolate contains a small amount of caffeine - but never enough to feel any effects.)
I don't have a moral objection to recreational drug use and I'm in strongly in favour of legalization. It's just not for me.

I don't drink, but that's only because I'm not 21 yet and don't know anyone who will buy me alcohol or anything, plus I'm broke. I don't smoke cigarettes because it's just never interested me. If I had more money, knew where to get them, didn't live with my parents, and was able to do it with someone with more experience to ensure safety, I might try certain other drugs (but there are some I don't think I'd ever touch).

I don't get drunk anymore because I'm a really dumb drunk, but I have one or two drinks if I got to a party because I like the taste.
I smoke hella weed and like to trip.
I used to do molly and adderall, now I don't like uppers so much, might do molly again some day.
I used to experiment with opiates, after seeing so many people I cared about have their lives ruined by oxy and heroin I will never again take an opiate for kicks.

Thanks to RedBen for that definition; I must be straight edge ("I had no idea"), since I never seriously did drugs and do not drink.
I tried dope once, but the only result was that I giggled a lot – the affect is apparently lost on someone not attuned to subtlety, like me. I can't imagine organizing one's like around dope, (as I have witnessed a couple of friends doing, at different times), though I enjoy the lift I get from tea.
As for alcohol, being tipsy is pleasant enough, but one pays, obviously, in the aftermath, which IMO is very unpleasant, not worth the effort.
EDIT: Of course, on reflection, I grasped that tea has caffeine in it, which, I guess, is a drug. I wonder if that means I lose my straight edge status.

I do like using MJ and psychedelics but I don't really drink alcohol at all, it doesn't interest me and is one of the most boring, dangerous and unhealthy drugs in my opinion. The rare occasions that I do drink I make sure to get myself absolutely wasted but that only happens once or twice a year. I'd rather smoke a bowl and think about life.

i love u.
far from edge, i'm an alcoholic and a keen drug (ab)user. there are many reasons for this though, beyond the fact that i just like being drunk and high

I used to be, but I found drugs and alcohol actually improved my quality of life significantly. Although there came a point where I was smoking too much weed, I only do it occasionally now and it's far more enjoyable this way. I totally would be the kind of person to get a dependency if it weren't for the fact that I'm an utter cheapskate and couldn't possibly ever justify to myself spending so much money on anything that isn't food - I fucking love food. My problem is things that are free or cheap; sex and the internet (not so much at the same time) are my vices.

I don't handle alcohol well, it makes me nauseous. Marijuana causes me to have severe panic attacks for whatever reason.
I'm a lot of fun at parties.

Like substances make people funny to hang out with. One of my closest friends is the soul of basically any party and doesn't consume anything of that kind.

I want to be, half heartedly. I want the clarity that you get from avoiding intoxicants, my hangovers are crushing, depressing affairs that I can't shake for days after. I associate sunday with utter misery. But without that release, I get angry and nihilistic for a while afterwards. Mostly dabbling in booze, I find it doesn't get any better, so I swap every now and then for coke or MD. But coke is too expensive and MDMA is worse for feeling shit afterwards than alcohol. It's a vicious cycle, but there are some nights where i'm profoundly grateful that I embarked on them  When you indulge for a routine, it becomes pointless. But a gig, or a big party not of randomers, but of all your close friends, it becomes worth it. Trying to replicate those effects outside of those circumstances though, well, then it seems silly again.

Alcohol rarely, drugs almost never (i kinda want to try more), sex oh yes...
As long as it doesn't disrupt party work, I have no problems with any of these things.

I find it hilarious that on a board filled with revolutionaries people still make the ideological distinction between alcohol and drugs.
Anyway, i have one pint of beer a week and i smoke up to 5grams of weed a week.

Technically I'm not, but it's honestly been months since I've had a drink. I'm generally only a social drinker and since I'm friendless right now(considering my old friends went and backstabbed me) I've had nobody to drink with really.
