This is a computer-generated fly-over, but it is built from thousands of images taken by the Mars Express satellite, which provided both the colors/texture and topography you see in the simulation. It's pretty cool stuff:

The media hyped it up (http://science.time.com/2012/12/03/martian-life-not-learning-from-a-false-alarm/) because they're scientifically ignorant fuckwits who care more about generating headlines than transmitting useful information.
