Ever since I was little, I have been fascinated with all kinds of Indian music. One major problem, however, is that most of it is too obscure to find on downloading programs and I don't want to spend money on records that may not be worth it.
Anyways, what music from India that I do listen to is pretty much confined to Ravi Shankar, who is excellent. "Hari Om" and "Tala-Tabla Tarang" are two of my favorites of his. I also love 60's Western pop music that is influenced by Indian styles. Take "Heart Full of Soul," by the Yardbirds, for instance. Jeff Beck composed it on sitar and then translated it to guitar, and it sounds fantastic.
I am a huge fan of Soundgarden, and one of my favorite (in my top three) songs of theirs is a track that Ben Shepherd composed called "Half." The actual music is only about a minute or so, but I still admire it as much as I like everything else Shepherd did in the group.
There is also the obvious plethora of Beatles songs inspired by Indian music, such as "Love You To," "Tomorrow Never Knows," and "Within You Without You."
I would like to escape the category of 'dilettante.' I'd like to invite everyone else with an Indian music fetish to post their favorite tracks so that other people (me) can give them a download.
