Loaded by The Velvet Underground is one of the finest records ever made in my opinion. This man was a musical genius. R.I.P.

Aye, seems so.
In my humble opinion, 'Venus in Furs' has a good claim to being the finest track of the last 50 years. A pioneer and all-round contrarian, he's going to be missed, for sure.

man, if i didn't fall in love with the lou reed and velvet underground records my dad had when i was a young teen i don't know who i'd be today. it's weird, because i haven't listened to him in a few years, but he had such an important influence on the younger me i'm absolutely devastated about this. :crying:

yeah he's an oddly strange candidate for being a huge influence. In my teen years I always saw the velvet underground's 1969 record as the first proper 'indie rock' record. Not sure how accurate a label that was, but it was cemented like that in my mind and I listened to it on repeat for many months, it's a fascinating record.

It's said that first Velvets record (it was 1967 by the way) only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it went and formed a band.
Difficult to see what bands like the Stooges, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine or the Jesus and Mary Chain would have done without the Velvets.

:( I am saddened by this news... I listened to Berlin when I read the news, because that record is brilliant.

I always kind of thought that he was a bit overrated, honestly. With the exception of his one hit, "Walk On The Wild Side".
I always remember his answer in an interview they gave him, about what was the difference between Lou Reed's scene in the 60s-70s and the hippies, to which he replied that hippies dressed in bright colors, smoked weed, and were homophobic, while he and his scene wore all black, shot heroin and loved gay people

Okay now it truly feels like 2013. "As I sat in front of the display, coffee in hand, I read the obituary for Lou Reed". The Velvet Underground were the background music of my life. Major influence on writers like William Gibson. (Read his short story collection "Burning Chrome".)

Without the Velvet Underground punk, glam, and alt rock would not have been the same

I feel bad. Sunday Morning has long been one of my favorite songs. To me the song seems to denote savage but bittersweet irony. I cry when I hear it.
I admit I'm not super knowledgable about his career, esp post Velvet Underground.I have heard when he was in high school on Long Island his parents or his shrink had him subjected to over a dozen electro shock treatments to "cure him" of homosexuality. It turned out, as far as I know, that he wasn't gay.
I don't know his politics, his music certainly seems to speak to an utter rejection of bourgoise culture and norms but in several statements he seemed cynical about the left as well.

This image as well as Lou's music set me on a path of acceptance and diversity before I was even a teen.

"One chord is fine," he once said, alluding to his bare-bones guitar style. "Two chords are pushing it. Three chords and you're into jazz.":(

Shocked to hear this today. Well he had as good of a run as any rock star: multigenerational career and fans, underground cred and mainstream recognition. He was a big part of the soundtrack in my life at various points.

To me, Perfect Day is one of the best songs ever. The first Velvet Underground album is one of the really great ones. Without Lou Reed and the Velvets, the indie music scene today would have looked a lot different.

i called up my dad about this, he said he found it like losing a father figure, so i guess it's like losing a grandfather figure for me. hah.
i felt a bit needy being so sad about it, but it seems many people have had similar responses. i put it to my friend like this: he was my first hero, and the first of my heroes to die. but i'm so thankful i found him when i did.

I definitely didn't "grow up" with his music, but I will say I discovered TVU at a good time at my life. When I was just starting to come to grips with being a transsexual, I heard Candy Says for the first time. It was melacholic, gentle, and mostimportantly sympathetic. It was very comforting to assured that, SOMEWHERE, even if that place obviously wasn't the Southern town I lived in, that there people who saw people like me as HUMAN, and deserving of love and compassion.
When I came out to my mother, and she told she thought I was being possessed by the devil, I had to listen to that song on repeat that night. It helped me wipe away my tears.
