What. The. Fuck.

DAVIS (CBS SF) – The former police officer who gained national attention after video surfaced of him pepper-spraying University of California, Davis students during an Occupy rally has reached a settlement with the university on a worker’s compensation claim related to the incident.

John Pike will receive more than $38,000 to settle a claim that he suffered depression and anxiety following the 2011 incident on campus, according to a report in the Davis Enterprise.

Pike will receive roughly the same amount as the individuals he pepper sprayed following a settlement with 21-plantiffs involved in the incident.

Pike was fired eight months after an investigation found that his action was unwarranted. Online videos of him casually spraying pepper-spray in the faces of nonviolent protesters went viral, prompting national outrage.

Hackers posted Pike’s information online. He received scores of threats that led a judge to rule against releasing the names of other officers at the scene.

Yeah, 'cause he's clearly upset over having to spray those protesters. What bullshit. If you watch the video, the asshole is clearly enjoying what he's about to do. He works up the crowd and everything (even though they were pleading with him not to spray anyone).

Edit - Just to add that as someone who actually suffers from anxiety attacks, his excuses about depression and anxiety really offend me. Seriously, fuck this guy.

well if they wouldnt the police might not be as assholish and repressive and the ruling class cant have that. i mean if the cops get actually punished everytime for murdering, beating, pepperspraying, harrassing and in general opressing people they might stop all that and then the ruling class has an impotent tool of opression, and that is no use for them obviously.

He was paid to go away. Nothing more. UC Davis legal team no doubt considered settling the worker comp claim to be the most cost effective option.

I haven't followed this incident in depth. Did Pike do the pepper spraying on his own initiative? (Since he was dismissed I assume this is the case) What orders came down from his superiors?

If he wasn't confident he'd get something out of a lawsuit, it wouldn't have been an issue in the first place.
