I love beer. I prefer it to any liquors...it's just good.

Right now I've been really into drinking Miller GD, after a long time of enjoying Rickards Red...kind of lost my taste for it. Was wondering if there were any beer lovers here, and which beers are your favourite. And how is Budweisers crown stuff? the Black Crown or whatever.

Do you prefer it to liquor because you're a light weight and can't handle your booze?

Some people do get into beer. I'd rather drink cider than harder stuff. By coincidence, I am also a lightweight.

Urgh, MGD. Only marginally better than High Life. Both are only drinkable if you're at a party and there's literally nothing else to drink. Same with Budweiser.

As far as cheap, shitty domestics go, I'd choose Pabst over those beers any day (or Lone Star, when I used to live in Texas). Either that or Mickey's Malt Liquor, LOL

I don't really drink beer much anymore, though.

I'm a total lightweight. Never interested in being so drunk I get sick, or have a hangover thats worse than a headache. Though, if I wasn't afraid of having a heart attack, I'd drink red bull and vodka all the time.

I don't know if I could honestly say whether I prefer beer or liquor, but Rickards Red is probably my favorite beer. Either that or Sleeman's Honey Brown.

I usually drink lagers, which is the most common type of beer around here. Around 5% is the optimal alcohol level in my opinion. I prefer ones with a little stronger, 'breadier' taste to watery ones such as for example Budweiser etc.

The finnish brand Karhu is nice (some cold ones waiting for me to get off work right now :)), otherwise I also enjoy swedish Mariestad. But I also like a variety of ales, Caffreys and Tetleys are nice.

And yep, I agree that beer is the supreme form of alcohol.

i like beer a lot. my favorites are blatz, schlitz and pabst but if i have the cash i will usually splurge on one of the many local brews

I was really into microbrews for awhile, a year or two ago. Then I quit drinking for awhile (I didn't actually quit quit, but compared to how I had been drinking, I quit), and now most of the beers I used to like I don't even like anymore. I had a dogfish head "90-minute" IPA recently, and that shit is disgusting. I used to love it so idk what happened, my tastebuds changed or something. Old Rasputin isn't even that good anymore. Although they got the seasonals in recently and alaska brewing co. has one with spruce tips that I still really, really like. But mostly if I drink beer now, I just do cheap piss beer like pbr. Mainly I just drink liquor though, because I'd rather not become a fatty in the future (not that liquor isn't fattening but you know, less is more). I had three "jubelales" a little bit ago, which I also used to like and now hate, and right now I'm drinking Jameson and eating a persimmon, which began as a horrible combination and then i passed the threshold of caring and now it's good.

My work luckily switched from Heineken to Jupiler recently, major improvement. At home I normally drink hertog jan or microbrews. If I go out, unless I go to a specialized beer cafe I just drink whatever there is... I'm not much of a beer Nazi.

I'm not much of a drinker these days, but when I do imbibe alcohol, it's usually lager or ale. My preference is for craft beers (like Hobgoblin) or real ale, but I can can also enjoy more common/cheaper stuff (like Carlsberg, Grolsch or even Stella), unless it's utter crap shit like Budweiser (Yankee pisswater), Fosters (Australians don't drink it, so why should I?) or Carling (which I won't touch at all, just ugh!).

I admit this probably makes me a bit of a beer snob and/or ale bore, but since I don't drink at all often why should I have substandard mass-produced crap when I do?

As for the nonsensical macho "handling booze" idiocy, if getting smashed is more important than tasting something decent, why bother actually drinking anything? Why not just hook up a cheap bottle of vodka to an intravenous catheter?

Quail

I don't think it's snobby not to drink Carling, Fosters or Budweiser. Those beers are just really horrible.

I am currently living in what is probably one of the best countries in the world for drinking beer, the Czech Republic The quality is good, and it cost around one €1 for half a litre. Even the cheap stuff is better than what passes for quality beer in most countries.

Absolutely agree.

My financial situation isn't exactly great at the moment, so I'm forced to consume only Croatian beer, which is quite okay (pilsner mostly, though there are quite good, but a bit pricey, dark ale solutions to my beer thirst problems). Apart from that most common way, there's the option of Irish and Belgian brews, a couple of em, once a month.

Dev, are you talking about beer price in stores or in bars and so on? If it is the latter, and I haven't been to Czech Republic in quite a while so don't know, then my envy is going to explode the roof

I don't think it's snobby not to drink Carling,
Incidentally, I'd say that Carling is comparable with standard Croatian beers with respect to quality. It's even more expensive by a really small margin, like approx 15 pennies or so.

Oh yeah, and I can't get enough of that microbrew in Zagreb which is served only in this specific restaurants/bars. Devrim will know but I can't remember if he liked it that much

This, I also love how much less money I spend than other people on alcohol. I don't get why being a 'lightweight' is seen as being bad ('ha, you drink less to get as much of a buzz as me, fucking lightweight').

In the pub, of course it is cheaper in the supermarket.

oh shit an alcohol thread

this month: pumpkin ales/porters/etc.. + Sake (not beer) + vodka (not beer at all)

don't like winter holiday craft brews I think they're way too complex and rich but I do like autumn craft beers

dogfish head, southern tier, and alagash are some of my favorite breweries although fullsail brewery's pumpkin porter is amazing

*I don't usually seek out IPA's because I normally don't like them. I don't like (as mentioned earlier by someone in this thread) dogfish head's IPA's but I do like their other beers * a lot *

somebody showed me this at work today:

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Officials are still investigating the cause of a house fire that broke out on 42nd St. near Oates Ave. in Columbus, Ga. Thursday afternoon, but residents are blaming a newly installed water heater.

Six adults and two young children were inside watching television when the room began filling with smoke.
After the children were rescued and everyone made it outside safely, a man who walks with a cane went back in the burning house to retrieve something he left behind.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," said Walter Serpit, "I went back into the house like a dummy and the door shut on me because this back draft was about to kill me."

Serpit managed to save several cans of beer and he escaped the home without getting burned.

Tastes bloody awful, however, when I was knee high to a grasshopper it was quite popular. I can only think for two reasons 1) it was considered manly, and 2) a misplaced sense of patriotism

I'm going for a beer in 10 mins. With myself. And a book.

Surprisingly, it's fairly easy to focus while reading in a bar. Even better atmosphere than doing that at home in silence.

The few times i drink alcohol, it's beer. I can't stand hard liquor. Something about the taste. I hate wine too. Just smelling wine makes me puke, yuck.

Beer is really good though. Nothing like being home alone in the weekend with a cold beer.

I don't drink much/often, but I like other drinks (i.e. wine, and I've tried jagermeister, different shots, and scotch whiskey on a few separate occasions). Nothing beats a cold beer in the summer, though.

I'm not picky about beer. The one beer I haven't liked is Budd Light Lime.

I probably should have tried out more when I was there last year. I only tried the usual Urquell as well as Koze (that's what I think it's called anyway), which I didn't really like. I also went to this bar who makes its own beer and cinnamon schnaps, it was very tourist-y and expensive. Afterwards I went to an absinth bar, it turned out to be a crazy night.

There has been a few microbreweries popping up in Norway the last years, and most of their beers are pretty good. Most notable brewery is Nøgne Ø - they have anything ranging from different versions of IPA's, ales, bitter, you name it. Haandbryggeriet also has some good ones, but haven't tasted that much. One of the more obscure ones is a smoked beer. If you have the money, Nøgne Ø would probably be the thing to look for in bars if anyone should ever come to Norway (you seriously shouldn't, though - probably the most expensive country to drink in). Some of the commercial beers are good too, Frydenlund is probably the best of those.

Irish beers are more than Guinness. O'Hara is pretty good, they have both stouts, red ale and more light beers. In Galway (west coast) they have a local beer called Galway Hooker, it's really good, but I think it's only served in a few bars.

In Belgium I once got drunk on nothing but different types of Leffe. It was glorious. I also love trappist beers, esp. Westmalle trippel. Yummy.

I started off at some point two days ago I think, drinking Fullsail brewings limited holiday release. It was okay, pretty balanced and smooth compared to a lot of holiday winter ales. Then I moved on to the worst cheap beers imaginable, but still have not consumed malt liquor i don't think. lots of beer consumed here over the last several days
