Hydebank Republican Prisoners, denied adequate exercise facilities & fresh air.

Today following a visit to Hydebank women’s Gaol outside Belfast, Cogús representatives announced their increasing concern and frustration at the failure of the administration there to provide adequate exercise facilities for Republican prisoners.
An unfortunate feature of life for Republican women prisoners in Hydebank in recent years has been the inadequate positioning of exercise space which was exposing them to malicious verbal abuse from male ‘young offenders’ and criminal prisoners.
Following repeated requests and lobbying from a range of independent bodies, the Hydebank administration last month agreed to move the exercise space for Republicans, to an area in which they would be able to walk free from abuse. In the meantime the women announced their intention to remain in their cells until the situation was rectified.
The cells in which Republican women are held in Hydebank contain frosted windows and provide no access to fresh air.
A month has now passed and the Republican Women still have no access to any outside exercise, furthermore following verbal inquiries from the prisoners themselves there appears to be little or no interest on behalf of the administration to take action any time soon.
Cogús/RNU would like to remind the Hydebank administration that the Republican women held there are part of a much wider family of Republican prisoners and campaigners, their low numbers should in no way be misinterpreted as a sign of weakness.
We strongly urge the Hydebank administration to take immediate measures to ensure than Republicans held there gain access to outside exercise as the most basic of human rights.
