Now I want to share this because it is meant to thank the Anarchist Tension.

You see, in my civics class we had to right a paragraph on how we feel about animal testing. I found it cruel, and surprisingly most others were against it too. The few who were against said the same basic argument "Animal life is more valuable than human life therefore we have right to do medical tests on them"

I felt like this was just plainly idiotic and i was the only one of those who were against animal testing to offer a counter argument and i said that nothing gives us the right to inflect a mass amount of pain on those who can't defend themselves against us this isn't a quick painless death that could happens to animals these chemicals forced into them can cause serious pain and most of the time it doesn't even give them the generosity of ending the pain with a death. It's not humane
Then one person for animal testing said then you don't eat meet.
Now at this point i figured Fuck it, why not?
"No I don't eat meet. Actions that go on in corporate farms is just plain evil"
She then said "but humans have been hunting and eating animals forever"
Then i thought to myself 'this is what i sounded like to TAT that one day. So this is where the thank you comes in, i stole your argument:
"Yes, humans have also been raping, murdering, waging wars and tons of other atrocities since civilization first appeared that doesn't make it right.
At this point the teacher had us move on to the next topic.

I realized today that I do sound hypocritical when I am against animal testing and still decide to eat and know what happens at slaughter houses. So i have decided to give the vegetarian thing a go.

I also dislike the idea of animal testing and the way that factory farms are run. I was vegan for a little under a year. the reason I stopped is because I lost faith in the idea of boycotting. I didn't feel like my abstaining from the consumption of animal products was actually making a difference. Exploitation of animals and humans alike is inevitable under capitalism. This problem simply cannot be solved until capitalism is obsolete. Dont get me wrong, I think it's cool that you chose to try the vegetarian thing out, that's just my two cents

I'm not sure how effective boycotts are, but to be consistent with my own principles I am vegan because I wouldn't want to eat an animal regardless of the economic system under which it was raised and killed.

I'm glad I could be useful to someone :)

And it's positive to hear you're deciding to take the step into vegetarianism. I always think a weaning process is the best thing to do. Don't just go cold turkey. Start by having a couple of days when you eat meat, then work down to just having one day and then one meal. I think it's easier that way. Just a suggestion.

On the issue of boycotting: For me, not wanting to participate in the meat and dairy industry is just a small aspect of why I refuse to eat animal products. The main reason I don't eat animal products is because I have a fundamental issue with the idea that humans should view other animals as things from which other things can be taken for our benefit. The interaction with other living creatures and the planet -- that we can just take what we want, when we want, without any consideration or consequence -- is indicative of a profoundly flawed society.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this animal testing thread placed in chit chat was a relatively positive one. When I saw the thread title and location I literally thought 'oh no..'. TAT, I also didn't know you were vegan.

It took me years, but I've been vegetarian for six months and it seems to be sticking. I could no longer justify eating meat while it is not necessary for me to survive.

Yeah, I should have clarified that my desire to be vegan was rooted in my disgust for abusive factory farming practices, not in the idea that meat consumption is inherently wrong.

That is a respectable opinion tho

On what basis is it right?

My question still stands.
