21st October 2013, 13:10
Date: Sunday, 3rd November at 3.00pm
Venue: SPGB premises, 52 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7UN
Directions: About 4 minutes walk south-east from Clapham North station on the Northern line of the London Underground system and 3 minutes walk from Clapham High Street station on the Circular Overground line.
The English Revolution is central to both the radical and revolutionary history of the English-speaking world, as well as the development of the British state, society, class structure and, indeed, capitalism itself. Against a Whiggish ideology that portrays it as just another step to the Utopia of a free-market liberal democracy, and also early, mechanistic Marxist-Leninist view of the (inevitable) replacement of the aristocracy by the bourgeoisie, this talk will put popular beliefs and struggles at the centre of events, from the end of the King's Personal Rule in 1640, through to the Restoration of 1660-1.
A talk by Rob Worden
Chair: Bill Martin
Free entry and refreshments
Audience participation invited
