Even if Milgram wasn't distorted, the experiment has always been done in incredibly hierarchical societies and there's no evidence this is human nature instead of political socialization

I don't believe any of the original subjects were ex-soldiers, or if they were then just enough to give a representative sample. The point was to get an empirical idea of broader aspects of "human nature," even if their ability to do so was limited for reasons mentioned above.

Across 18 experimental conditions, compliance ranged from 93 percent, when the participant did not have to directly administer shocks, to 0 percent, when two authorities gave contradictory orders, when the experimenter was the victim, and when the victim demanded to be shocked.Am I missing something or is that not kind of fucked up? Nobody does it if the person being shocked consents to it?

if it was potentially lethal? i can't imagine many people pulling the trigger on a gun even if the person it was aimed at demanded to be shot.

But certain people in the military power structure want to stifle that while they still can.
