I dont know if anyone on this forum is a really top philosopho or have studied it but if there is. I was reading the year 12 HSC questions for philosophy and one of the questions why do some philosophiers beleive if there is no god then there is not death. Can anyone answer that.

The belief that one's conciousness continues after death is part of the human fear of leaving things unfinished- if I were to die tomorrow, there would be thousands of things that I haven't done/said/seen.
One way to achieve 'immortality' is to leave your mark on the world, whether conciously or subconciously.
monuments, worship of dead emporers(sp?) as gods, and diaries/writings are all example of this.
Those are are pretty much the 'concious' ways of gaining immortality.
You can also gain 'immortality' by doing such things as:
Starting world wars
killing millions
etc.
these are pretty much unconcious... but there are exceptions
"History will vindicate me"
The belief that because there is no God there is no death is plain ridiculous.(This is why I think a lot of philosophy is horse crap invented by puffed up long word lovers.)
When you die, you die. your body stops functioning.

Death is just when the body expires. But what about our minds? Our mind is not material, so surely some part of us lives on.

Our mind is a material, but perhaps the most complex one in the universe.
Just because we haven't figured out exactly how it works doesn't mean you can attatch some sort of 'mystical aura' around it.

But wouldnt that mean that our thoughts, views and memories were material also?

Perhaps as complex electro-chemical reactions.
The things you described are 'perceptions'

Dostoevsky said 'If God dosent exist, then everything is permitted'
Nietzsche said 'God is dead' heralding a new dawn for man and freedom from the Gods, their masters etc...
For death maybe look up Heidegger who explains that death is nothingness and all about Being etc.
I'm too stoned for really describing this but I have studied them all so I will put up a new post on this topic as well as a bibliography if you want or you can PM me whatever.

Unfortunately, some people forget that sometimes turning to science is a better idea than turning to philosophy. I could understand hearing a philosopher saying that if there IS a god there is not death, but if there isn't a god? If this was on a basis of "What if I don't even exist", I could see the metaphysical argument, but on a religious basis, it dosen't really work.

NoXion see you theory that once we die thats it our mind doesnt exist has no proof and cant yet be proved by science so that why philosophy(thrist for knowledge) is needed to give you theory some backing.
